The fastest growing section of the lighting market by far is energy efficient lighting, also known as low energy. As more people become aware of the benefits of energy efficiency and technology in design and manufacturing improves, the availability and range of energy efficient lighting is constantly growing. Statistics show that lighting accounts for 30-45% of the average household electricity bill, and energy efficient lightings saves an average of 70% of the energy used on lighting. There are two different ways of introducing energy efficient lighting into your home; the first method is replacing your existing lamps with their low energy equivalents. For example, replacing a 60 watt incandescent candle lamp with a 9 watt extra-mini spiral lamp gives exactly the same lumen output (brightness) but consumes only a sixth of the original power consumption. Replacing several of these lamps will produce a greatly recognisable difference in your energy bills.
The second way of introducing energy efficient lighting is to have a dedicated fitting, like the ones featured in this section. While low energy lamps must have a ballast (the mechanism which starts up the light) in the lamp fitting itself, dedicated low energy fittings have the ballast built into the light fixture, consequently producing a light which is much faster in reaching its full brightness. However, if you choose to purchase a dedicated low energy fitting it must be stressed that you cannot use any lamp other than the lamp which is specified by the manufacturer. The main difference between putting an energy efficient lamp into a standard fitting, and an energy efficient fitting, is the dedicated fitting takes marginally less time to reach its full brightness.
