Crystal glass contains a minimum of 24% lead oxide; it's the addition of this chemical which increases the brilliance of the refracted light, creating a spectrum of colours when illuminated. Crystal can be up to 35% lead oxide; the greater the content in the crystal, together with the quality of the cut, the finer the sparkle! For example, Austrian Swarovski crystal contains approximately 32% lead oxide. In order to reach the desired beautiful rainbow spectrum, Swarovski often coats its crystal with special metallic coatings.

Contemporary chandeliers today have evolved over time from the classic Baroque styles found across Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, famously at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. Crystal glass making is a highly regarded art form which requires an enormous amount of craftsmanship; today the finest lead crystal is produced in the Czech Republic (where it is said the art form originated in the 15th century) and Egypt. All of our crystal fittings are decorated with Czech or Egyptian glass.
