Kitchen Lighting

The range of lighting available for the kitchen is ever growing, and is currently at its widest ever. The different varieties in what is available can dramatically alter the mood and atmosphere of the room. While in recent years it has gained an industrial and cold reputation, fluorescent lighting is making a comeback of sorts with innovative designs being developed by high-end companies in order to create lighting which is attractive and stylish, whilst fulfilling its function and importantly today reducing energy costs. Fluorescent lighting is available in sleek tubes which are encased in high quality, contemporary fittings in a wide variety of finishes. Fluorescent lighting is also undoubtedly the most suitable selection for a bright, excellently lit room, as it casts no shadows. Tubes are also available in cool white, warm white and daylight for a more personalised effect.

In recent years halogen spotlights have gained popularity and continue to do so. Spotlights cast individual beams of light, which while bright and powerful, do cast shadows due to their single concentration. Spotlights are available in a wide variety of finishes, and can be installed with fire hoods for safer use. Spotlights can be used with mains voltage – when the light is directly powered by the mains electricity – or low voltage – when the spotlight is wired into a transformer wired into the mains, converting the 240 voltage down to just 12 volts. This also increases the safety of the lights.

Undercabinet lighting is a popular area in the kitchen; again, either fluorescents or spotlights can be used. Fluorescents are very popular for areas where an excellent illumination is required, and spotlights can be arranged for an impressive dramatic effect.
