Picture Lighting

We can supply a wide range of picture lights available in a variety of finishes, ranging from aged nickel to polished brass to burnished bronze to brushed chrome. Picture lights have been used for decades to highlight and accentuate the art displayed on walls in homes, museums, galleries, restaurants and most public spaces. Today’s options stretch from traditional and classic designs in polished brass to more contemporary fittings featuring sleek halogen lamps for more efficient energy consumption and effective luminosity.

There is little use in displaying artwork in your home if it is not well lit. Pictures and artwork should be illuminated at just the right brightness and density to highlight the details of the picture without creating a glare. In the gallery lighting situations the lighting is adjusted in brightness according to the medium used. Watercolours have low lighting; modern acrylic artwork requires a large spread of light. Adjusting the light levels by altering the lamps wattages is more desirable than dimming as when a lamp is dimmed the colour shifts toward the warm colours. It would be more effective to use a 20 watt lamp at full brightness rather than a 50 watt lamp dimmed by 50 percent. New technology developments have lead to LED use in picture lights. There are several benefits of LED technology; the lamps consume next to nothing in power yet emit the same strength and power in light as the average halogen lamp; due to their extremely small use of power they last for years and do not need to be replaced within a decade of installation; importantly for artwork, LEDs do not give off ultra violet or infra red radiation, which other lamps do. This ensures the quality and detail of the art is not affected or damaged.

Also, picture lights should never be larger than the picture it is lighting as it would look uneven and take away part of the dramatic effect. We only stock products from manufacturers with excellent standards of quality, so you can be assured that the picture lights on this page will be a worthy investment.
