Spotlights

Having decided upon spotlights, many customers find themselves lost when they begin to research the enormous selection available. Firstly, there are many different types of spotlight. There is the recessed spotlight, which sits in the ceiling or floor of a room, flushed into the surface so only the lamp and cover plate are visible. Recessed spotlights are available for indoor and outdoor use, and can be placed in swimming pools, ceiling beams, showers and kitchens (depending on the safety regulations for each product). Within recessed spots are the sub-categories of fire-rated and acoustic-rated, which are specially developed for protection against electric faults and fires. Recessed spotlights can either be mains voltage (the fittings are wired directly into the mains circuit) or low voltage (the fittings are wired into a transformer which converts the mains voltage from 240v to 12v). It is paramount that only low voltage fittings are installed in bathrooms and any location where there is risk of moisture contact. For a wider selection of bathroom spotlights, please visit the dedicated bathroom lighting section.

Another type of spotlight is the surface mounted spotlight, which is more similar to a ceiling or wall fitting in that it is mounted onto a surface, not within it. These spotlights are more commonly bars or plates, featuring more than one light on each fitting. A further category is the clip-on spotlights, which were designed for use in areas where it is awkward to wire or mount a light fixture. They are used for assistance with reading or working, in areas where the spotlight can be clamped onto a surface such as a shelf or door.
