Another type of spotlight is the surface mounted spotlight, which is more similar to a ceiling or wall fitting in that it is mounted onto a surface, not within it. These spotlights are more commonly bars or plates, featuring more than one light on each fitting. A further category is the clip-on spotlights, which were designed for use in areas where it is awkward to wire or mount a light fixture. They are used for assistance with reading or working, in areas where the spotlight can be clamped onto a surface such as a shelf or door.
