5 kinds of statement lighting for every home

It's true: choosing the right light can actually transform a room! Here are five 'statement lights' you can buy today that will make a world of difference...

You may have heard the term 'statement light' or 'statement lighting' – but what does this actually mean? In this post, we'll look at what kind of fitting would be classed as statement lighting – and why it can be a great idea to have one.

KES Lighting and Home has now been supplying lights to customers in the UK and beyond for more than 40 years, and 'what is a statement light' is a question we hear a lot. Here's how we like to answer it...

We believe that a statement light is any light fitting that brings something special to a room.

And that's it! In a small, bland room, an attractive table lamp can be a statement light. But more commonly, statement lighting describes big, bold light fittings that draw the eye.

In doing so, these lights do more than simply throw light into a dark corner of the room. They actually bring something extra to the whole feel of a room – and in the right hands, a statement light can be one of the most powerful interior design features you can add.

Here are five kinds of statement light that we love – any one of which might just be what you're looking for when trying to transform your home.

1/ Chandeliers

Most dictionaries describe a chandelier as a "a large, decorative hanging light with branches for several bulbs or candles" or something very similar. The "branches" part is key – it's what denotes a chandelier from other kinds of hanging lights.

We've all been to a hotel or stately home with a large, ornate chandelier made up of hundreds of crystal prisms – these refract light throughout the space around the fitting – but chandeliers can work in even modest homes, too.

While some chandeliers require relatively high ceilings – the Impex New York 24 Light Czech Crystal Long Ceiling Chandelier being a prime example – others take a different approach. The Diyas Nydia Crystal 8 Light Pendant French Gold Frame, for example, has a much shorter drop.

2/ Stairwell pendants

In many properties, the ceiling with the highest 'drop' is the one directly above the stairs. And while long, hanging stairwell pendants don't work in every home, when they are right for the available space they can be absolutely transformational.

Many stairwell pendants tend to be modern in design, such as the breathtaking Schuller Nebula 584541 LED 12 Light Spiral Ceiling Pendant Chrome, which features 12 pendants suspended from a circular chrome ceiling plate.

Equally stunning, is the Schuller Ring 717694B 8 Ring LED Ceiling Pendant Sanded Matt Black 4000K Bluetooth Dimmable, which features eight suspended concentric circles of light and can be controlled by your phone.

We've seen countless stairwell pendant installations that are little short of magical.

3/ Tiffany lamps and Tiffany ceiling lights

It's hard not to notice a Tiffany light when you enter a room. There is simply something so iconic and elegant about them that you are instantly transported back to one of the most evocative eras of the past 200 years: the start of the 1900s.

Tiffany lamps and lights pay homage to Louis Comfort Tiffany, who created the distinctive stained glass design that we all know and many of us love to this day.

For a real statement piece, a large Tiffany ceiling light such as the Quoizel Inglenook 3 Light Tiffany Island Chandelier Valiant Bronze is hard to beat. Measuring more than a meter in length, it is just the thing to add an injection of style to any room.

But even a couple of relatively small Tiffany table lamps can make quite the statement in the right kind of room. Two Interiors 1900 Tiffany Dark Star Large Table Lamps, for example, will always bring a dash of elegance.

4/ Architecturally-stunning lights

There isn't really an official category for those large, jaw-dropping lights that are neither long pendant lights nor chandeliers. We like to think of 'architecturally-stunning lights' as any kind of large light that immediately turns heads when people enter a room.

Lights, for example, such as the Masiero Ola Ceiling Large 160cm Island Pendant, which almost looks like a coral reef – or perhaps an upended boat – suspended from the ceiling. No one could deny that this fits into both the 'statement light' and 'architecturally-stunning' categories!

Another example is Schonbek's Sarella Pendant Fitting Heirloom Gold Heritage Crystal light – a halo of beautiful lights that looks almost as good when switched off as when it is switched on.

5/ Multi-arm lights

Chandeliers don't have the monopoly on multi-arm lights; there are a great number of multi-arm statement lights that work on rooms of all shapes and sizes. Many of them are modern in design and work especially well when placed over a dining table.

A good example is the Regent Multi-Arm 5 Light Bar Pendant Fitting Antique Brass And Opal Glass Parla – we like to think it's the kind of fitting you'd see in a stylish bar or restaurant, though we have many customers who have told us it looks equally stunning in a home setting, too.
