How many outdoor wall lights do I need, and how far apart should they be?

There's no fixed rule, it depends on what you're lighting. For a run along a patio wall, garage or boundary, space fittings evenly so each pool of light slightly overlaps the next rather than leaving dark gaps between them. For a single feature such as a gate, French doors or a garden room entrance, a pair either side is usually enough. Walking the space at dusk is the best way to judge gaps before you commit.
What IP rating do I need for an outdoor wall light in the garden?

On a garden or boundary wall with no overhang for shelter, most fittings are directly exposed to rain and wind, so look for IP65 or higher. Somewhere more sheltered, such as under a car port roof or a covered outbuilding wall, IP44 is usually enough. If the wall backs onto open countryside or gets driving rain from a prevailing wind, treat it as fully exposed and go for the higher rating.
Will an outdoor wall light survive right on the coast?

In a very exposed coastal spot, salt air, strong wind and driving rain all take a toll faster than they would further inland, so choose a wall light in a corrosion-resistant material such as 316 stainless steel and rated IP65 or higher. How many lumens do I need for an outdoor wall light?

It depends on the job the light is doing far more than a single target number. A decorative wall light for ambience beside a door needs far fewer lumens than a fitting meant to light a path safely underfoot, and a security floodlight needs more again. Each product page lists the lumen output for that specific fitting, so compare a few side by side rather than aiming for one fixed figure.
How do I install an outdoor wall lantern?

Position matters as much as fixing, mount the lantern where the cable entry point stays protected from direct rain, and always fit it against a flat, sound section of wall using suitable fixings for the material, brick, render or timber cladding. The electrical connection itself, wiring into the switch or feed, should always be left to a qualified electrician, particularly for anything beyond a straightforward like-for-like replacement.
Are there outdoor wall lights that don't need electricity?

Yes, an outdoor-rated wall light will work perfectly well indoors, a higher IP rating simply means better protection against moisture and dust, which never hurts. The main things to check are the style, since some outdoor designs look quite heavy-duty for a living room, and whether it's a mains-wired fitting or needs a plug socket nearby if you were hoping for something more portable.
