Modern Table Lamps

Modern table lamps can make a statement in any room, regardless of whether you are looking for a practical lighting solution of more of a statement piece, so why not have both. You will be amazed at the variety that KES Lighting is able to offer you, taking into account your décor and whether you wish to introduce some colour, bling or simple contemporary lines. Many of our lamps have a distinct designer look about them, but all are at extremely competitive prices.

If you are looking for a table lamp that is completely different and will make a statement, then for pure class at an amazingly low price, take a look at the beautiful amber crystal shade with its polished brass frame by Diyas. For totally gorgeous lamps, the Luna Kiss has to be an option with its delicate, golden glass shade which, for sheer opulence, can be enhanced with strings of coloured crystals. Another option is the very modern, yet with a classic twist, Trace Three Light Asfour crystal lamp with its wonderful Flemish frame which creates a stunning effect when lit. Our makers will not disappoint: Elstead, Franklite and Kolarz to name but a few. The range of finishes, from polished chrome and light gold through to metallic and ceramic will suit any room.

Modern - Table Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

What makes a table lamp modern?

Form over ornament. A modern base is geometric or sculptural, a cylinder, a sphere, a stem with no turning, and the material is left to speak: brushed metal, plain ceramic, smoked or opal glass. The shade is usually a straight drum. Across our 189 modern table lamps the commonest finishes are antique brass, polished chrome and nickel.

What is the difference between a modern and a traditional table lamp?

What the base is trying to be. A traditional base imitates something, a candlestick, an urn, a balustrade, and hides its structure behind turning and moulding. A modern base is a shape in its own right and shows how it is made. Shades follow: fabric empire with a trim for traditional, plain drum or none at all for modern.

What size table lamp suits a console table?

Roughly a third of the length of the console, and no taller than the height of the table itself plus about half again. On a 120cm console that means a pair of lamps around 40 to 50cm tall, or one larger lamp near 60cm off centre. The shade should not overhang the front edge of the table.

What bulb do modern table lamps take?

The standard E27 cap on 87 of our 189, with E14 and G9 covering most of the rest and 10 having an integrated LED. Choose 2700K for a living room and 3000K if the lamp is doing any work. Where the base is clear or smoked glass, the bulb is part of the design, so a clear filament LED is worth the extra.

Which brands make the best modern table lamps?

It depends what you want from it. In our range Eichholtz leads on sculptural design-led pieces with 40 lamps, Quintiesse has 30 covering the accessible middle, and Elstead and Novena add 23 and 21. Astro contributes 14, mostly the plainer functional shapes where the lamp is meant to work rather than be looked at.

How many table lamps does a room need?

Two at least in a living room, at opposite ends of the seating, and a third if the room is over about 5m long. The point is not brightness, it is having light at seated height in more than one place, which is what stops a room feeling like it has a spotlight in the middle and shadows everywhere else.

When is a modern table lamp the wrong choice?

In a room with a strong period character it is not meant to contrast with. A plain cylinder on a carved mantelpiece reads as a gap rather than a statement. It is also wrong where the lamp must do real work: most modern bases pair with a plain drum shade that spreads light evenly, not one you can aim at a page.
