Crystal Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

What counts as crystal lighting?

Any fitting whose decoration is cut or moulded glass hung, set or clustered to refract the light, from a full multi-tier chandelier to a single flush fitting with a crystal ring. Across our 1,017 crystal fittings the format runs from small pendants and flush ceiling lights through to wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps.
Which crystal brands do you stock?

Four cover most of the range. Maytoni accounts for 580 of our 1,017 crystal fittings, Diyas for 169, Impex for 50 and Schonbek for 41. Maytoni and Diyas cover the mid range and the volume, Impex the traditional chandelier shapes, and Schonbek the top end, where several ranges use Swarovski crystal.
What is the difference between a crystal chandelier and a crystal pendant?

Arms and scale. A chandelier branches into several arms or tiers from a central body and wants 2.4m of ceiling and space around it. A crystal pendant hangs one fitting on a single drop, often a ring, globe or small cluster, and works where a chandelier would crowd the room. Pendants can also be used in pairs and threes.
What bulbs do crystal fittings take?

Small caps, because the bulb has to disappear behind the glass. E14 is commonest at 174 of our crystal fittings, with G9 capsules next at 58, and a handful using GU10 or E27. Always choose 2700K: the amber flash off cut crystal is the whole point, and a 4000K bulb turns it into a grey glitter.
Does crystal lighting work in a modern room?

Yes, and it is one of the better ways to stop a plain room feeling austere. Choose a modern crystal shape, a ring, a linear bar or a simple sphere, rather than a traditional multi-arm design, and keep everything around it quiet. Chrome and polished nickel read more modern than gold here, and they account for 159 of our crystal fittings.
How do you clean crystal light fittings?

Switch off and let the fitting cool for 15 minutes first. Then wipe each piece with a soft lint-free cloth barely damp with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, drying as you go. Never spray anything at a warm fitting and never put the drops through a dishwasher. Once or twice a year is plenty away from a kitchen.
When is crystal lighting the wrong choice?

Directly over a hob or a hard-working kitchen table. Cut glass collects grease and dust in every facet and there is no quick way to clean 200 of them, so it stops sparkling within a year. It is also wrong under a low ceiling, where a fitting designed to be seen from below ends up at eye level.
