Outdoor Driveway Lights

The imagery is vivid: approaching your home under a dark, starry sky and watching as your driveway bathes in the gentle luminescence of tastefully chosen lights. This scene, which many imagine only for grand mansions or glossy magazines, can be a reality for any home. It's a marriage of style and functionality, where aesthetic brilliance meets practicality, ensuring you always find your way home safely.

Discovering the Magic of Recessed Outdoor Ground Lights

Among the myriad of outdoor lighting options available for driveways, recessed outdoor ground lights emerge as a crowd favorite. Their beauty lies in their subtlety. They don't scream for attention but provide a soft, guiding luminescence that traces the path.

Placing them strategically, perhaps flanking either side of the driveway, not only helps demarcate its edges for seamless parking but also creates a runway effect that's nothing short of mesmerizing. While a short driveway might only require a few of these fixtures, longer stretches can transform into lit pathways, creating a warm, welcoming aura for anyone arriving at your home.

Spotlights: A Fusion of Form and Function

While recessed lights offer a certain understated charm, spotlights stand tall, both literally and figuratively, in the world of outdoor driveway lighting. Available on spikes or posts, these lights can be both decorative and functional. Their adjustability post-installation allows homeowners to shine light where it's most needed, be it to highlight a particular landscaping feature or to ensure safe navigation from the car to the doorstep.

Why LED Driveway Lights are the Way to Go

LED technology has revolutionized the lighting industry, and driveway lights have not been left behind. LED lights, known for their efficiency and longevity, are perfect for outdoor settings, especially in places where they might need to stay on for extended durations.

Their benefits extend beyond just energy savings. The variety of designs available, from the sleek stainless steel to the rustic charm of natural brass, ensures that there's an LED light for every aesthetic preference. Moreover, the IP-rated feature of these lights offers peace of mind, assuring users that they're designed to withstand the unpredictable outdoor elements.

Driveway Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the best lighting for a driveway?

Low and repeated rather than one bright floodlight. Bollards or recessed ground lights down one edge, at 4 to 6m centres, give a driver the line of the drive without dazzle, and a wall light or 2 at the house end covers the walk from car to door. A floodlight on a PIR is security, and that is a separate job. See our bollards and ground lights.

What IP rating do driveway lights need?

IP65 or better for anything at ground level, and IP44 as an absolute minimum on a wall. Across our 55 driveway fittings, 15 are IP65, 17 are IP44 and 3 are IP67, which is rated for temporary immersion. Water pools on a drive and runs to the lowest point, so ground fittings get a harder test than anything on a wall.

Can you drive over a ground light?

Only one rated for it, and the load rating is a separate figure from the IP rating. A drive-over fitting states the weight it will take, often quoted in tonnes, and the housing has to be bedded in concrete or a compacted base so the load goes into the ground rather than the fitting. A walkover light will not survive a car.

What is the difference between a drive-over and a walkover light?

The load it carries. A walkover light is built for foot traffic and suits a path or a terrace. A drive-over is heavier, with a thicker lens and a stronger housing, and quotes a vehicle load in tonnes. They look near identical once installed, which is why the spec matters more than the picture. 3 of our 55 driveway fittings are IP67, rated for temporary immersion.

Should driveway lights be on a sensor?

A photocell yes, a PIR usually not. A dusk-to-dawn photocell brings the drive on at nightfall and off at dawn, which is what you actually want. A PIR covering 10m or more of driveway triggers on passing cars, cats and next door's visitors, and a light flicking on and off all evening annoys everyone including you.

How far apart should driveway lights be?

4 to 6m along the edge for bollards, closer at a bend or a change of level where the driver needs the line. Light one side rather than both: a single run reads as a guide, and two parallel runs read as a runway. Mark the gate posts and any step separately, since those are what people actually hit.

When is a driveway light the wrong choice?

Where it shines into a neighbour's window or onto the road. Artificial light from a property can be a statutory nuisance under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, and a drive is the commonest place it happens. Aim everything downward, keep the output modest, and never point a floodlight along the boundary.
