Bollards - Ground Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is a bollard light for?

Marking a route at low level without glare. A bollard stands between about 40cm and 1m and throws light downward and outward around itself, so it lights the path rather than the person on it. Use them along a drive, a garden path or a set of steps, where a taller post would put light in people's eyes.
How tall should a garden bollard be?

Between 40cm and 1m for a path, and up to about 1.2m on a driveway edge where it also needs to be seen by a car. Lower than 40cm and it lights almost nothing beyond its own base. The taller ones spread light further, so you need fewer of them, which usually works out tidier as well as cheaper.
What IP rating does a bollard need?

IP65, and 25 of our 38 bollards are rated to it. A bollard sits at ground level where rain bounces up and water pools around the base, which is a harder test than a wall light gets. IP44 is only acceptable under cover. Check the rating at the base rather than the head, since that is where water gets in.
What is the difference between a bollard and a ground light?

Where the fitting sits. A bollard stands above ground and lights outward from its own body, so you see the fitting. A ground light is recessed into the surface and throws light upward, so you see only the light. Bollards suit soft landscaping and borders, ground lights suit paving and driveways where nothing should stick up.
Do garden bollards rust?

The good ones are guaranteed not to. In our range 14 bollards carry a 5 year warranty against severe corrosion, 3 carry 8 years and 7 carry a 15 year warranty against structural failure, which is what proper galvanising and marine-grade castings buy. Corten steel is the exception: it is meant to weather to a rust finish and then stabilise.
How far apart should bollards be spaced?

3 to 4.5m along a path, so the pools of light just touch and nobody walks through a dark gap. Closer than 3m and you have a runway. Stagger them side to side rather than lining them up in pairs, which lights the same route with half the fittings and looks far less municipal.
When is a bollard the wrong choice?

Anywhere a mower or a car has to pass. A bollard is an obstacle by design, so along a drive edge or across a lawn it will eventually be clipped, and a fitting knocked out of upright lets water into the base. Use recessed ground lights or wall-mounted lights on those runs and keep bollards to fixed borders.
