Lamp Posts - Ground Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

How tall should a garden lamp post be?

Between about 1.8m and 2.5m for a driveway or a front path, which puts the lantern above head height and lights the ground rather than your eyes. Shorter posts of around 1m to 1.5m suit a border or a low front garden. Our range runs from compact pedestal heights up to the taller Norlys signal posts.

What IP rating does a lamp post need?

IP44 at minimum and IP54 or better in an exposed position. Of our 36 lamp posts, 13 are IP44, 5 are IP54 and 2 are IP65. The rating matters more at the base than the top: water runs down a post and collects at ground level, so the cable entry and the seal there are what fail first.

How is a garden lamp post fixed?

Three ways, and the product page states which. A root section is concreted into the ground, which is the strongest and what the taller posts need. A bolt-down flange fixes to an existing concrete pad or a plinth. A spike pushes into soft ground and suits only the shortest decorative posts. Anything over about 2m wants concreting.

What is the difference between a lamp post and a bollard?

Height and what they light. A post stands 1.8m or more and carries a lantern that lights an area, so it suits a driveway or a gate. A bollard is 40cm to 1m and throws light downward around itself, so it edges a path without glare. Posts are a statement, bollards are wayfinding.

Do garden lamp posts rust?

Good ones resist it for years. Norlys posts in our range carry a 15 year warranty against structural failure and others carry a 3 or 10 year anti-corrosion guarantee, which is what proper galvanising and casting buy you. Cheap steel posts rust at the base where they meet wet ground, which is exactly where you cannot see it.

Can a lamp post be fitted with a sensor?

Yes, usually with a dusk-to-dawn photocell rather than a PIR. A photocell brings the post on at nightfall and off at dawn, which is what you want on a driveway. A PIR on a post tends to trigger on passing cars and foxes. Some posts have the photocell built in, and otherwise it wires into the circuit.

When is a lamp post the wrong choice?

On a short or narrow approach. A 2m post 3m from the front door dominates the elevation and lights nothing the house is not already lighting, and on a narrow path it is something to walk into in the dark. For a short front path, a wall lantern by the door and two bollards will do more with less.
