What is a recessed downlight?

A light set into the ceiling so only the trim shows, throwing light straight down. It needs a void above the ceiling deep enough to take the body, typically around 100mm, and a hole cut for each one. We stock 178, dominated by Astro with 86 and Collingwood with 55, and 47 of them have an integrated LED.
What does IP65 from below and IP20 from above mean?

That the fitting is sealed on the room side but not the loft side. 27 of our recessed downlights carry this rating, and it is the honest way to describe a bathroom downlight: the face is protected against water jets from inside the room, while the body sitting in a dry ceiling void is not. It is a bathroom fitting, not an outdoor one.
What is a fire-rated downlight?

One whose body restores the fire resistance the ceiling loses when a hole is cut in it, usually by an intumescent seal that expands in heat and closes the opening. It is needed wherever the ceiling separates floors, which covers most downlights in a house with a room above. Ratings are quoted in minutes, commonly 30, 60 or 90.
How many downlights does a room need?

Fewer than most people fit. As a guide, one per square metre and a half of floor area, set 60 to 90cm in from the walls so they wash the walls rather than the middle of the floor. A 4m by 3m kitchen therefore wants about 8, not 14. Too many gives an even flat light with no shape to it.
What is the difference between a downlight and a spotlight?

Whether it aims. A downlight is fixed and points straight down, lighting the floor beneath it. A spotlight tilts and rotates, so you can put light on a worktop, a picture or a shelf. Many of our 178 recessed fittings are adjustable and therefore both, and the product page says whether the head moves and through how many degrees.
What bulb do recessed downlights take?

GU10 on 95 of our 178, which is a mains-voltage bulb needing no driver, and an integrated LED on 47, which does. GU10 is the more flexible choice because you can change the beam angle, the brightness or the colour temperature later just by changing the bulb, and you can replace a failed one without an electrician.
When are recessed downlights the wrong choice?

In a bedroom ceiling above the bed, where you look straight into them lying down, and in any ceiling that cannot be cut. They are also wrong as a room's only light: a grid of downlights gives flat, even light with no focus, which is why so many kitchens feel like offices. Add a pendant or lamps for shape.
