What is an indoor lantern ceiling light?

A pendant built as a glazed box or cage on a chain or rod, taking its shape from a carriage or hall lantern but rated for inside. The glass panels give a soft, contained light rather than a wide wash, which is why they suit halls and stairwells. We hold 113 of them, mostly from Diyas, Lekki, Hinkley and Impex.
Where do indoor lanterns work best?

Halls, landings and stairwells, and over a square dining table. They are designed to be seen from below and from the side, so a stairwell where the fitting is viewed from two levels shows one off properly. In a living room they tend to look formal, and in a kitchen the glazing bars cast busy shadows.
How low should an indoor lantern hang?

Leave at least 2.1m of clear headroom in a hall or a landing, measured to the lowest point. In a stairwell, hang so the base sits roughly level with the first floor landing, which is what makes the fitting read from both storeys. Over a table you can go lower, to 70 or 90cm above the top.
What is the difference between an indoor and an outdoor lantern?

Sealing, and it is not cosmetic. An indoor lantern is IP20, meaning no protection against water, and is often open at the bottom. An outdoor one is IP44 or IP65, with gasketed glazing and a drained body. They can look near identical, so check the rating rather than the shape before putting one in a porch.
What bulbs do indoor lanterns take?

Mostly the small E14 cap, which covers 48 of our 113 indoor lanterns, with E27 next at 14. Because the bulb sits behind clear glass and is visible from below, shape matters: a candle or a small globe LED in 2700K looks right, and an oversized bulb in a compact lantern looks wrong from the stairs.
Do indoor lanterns suit a modern house?

They can, in the plainer shapes. A slim black or antique brass lantern with clean glazing bars and no scrollwork sits comfortably in a modern hall, particularly against panelling or a plain stair. What dates quickly is a heavily ornamented lantern with amber glass, which needs a period house around it to make sense.
When is an indoor lantern the wrong choice?

Under a low ceiling, and as a room's only light. Lanterns need about 2.4m to hang properly, and below that they crowd the space and put glazing at eye level. The glass panels also contain the light rather than spreading it, so a lantern will mark a hall beautifully and leave a living room short.
