Industrial lighting embodies a blend of functionality, durability, and bold aesthetics, making it a sought-after choice for those aiming to infuse their spaces with a touch of rugged elegance and historical charm. Originating from the practical designs found in factories and warehouses of the early 20th century, industrial lighting fixtures are characterized by their utilitarian materials such as metal, glass, and wood, often featuring exposed bulbs, metal cages, and rustic finishes that highlight their mechanical and raw appeal.

This lighting style is versatile, complementing a wide range of interior themes from the minimalist and modern to the eclectic and vintage. Industrial lighting is not just about illuminating a space; it's about adding character and a narrative, evoking a sense of history and craftsmanship that stands out in any setting. Whether it's a pendant light hanging over a kitchen island, a floor lamp in a living room, or wall sconces lining a hallway, each piece serves as a statement of both form and function.

Incorporating industrial lighting into your home or commercial space can transform the ambiance, adding a layer of depth and intensity that is both inviting and inspiring. These fixtures are designed to be bold and impactful, making them ideal for spaces that seek to make a statement while providing ample lighting. The raw materials and simple, yet striking designs of industrial lighting fixtures make them durable and timeless, ensuring they remain a staple in interior design for years to come.

Industrial Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is industrial style lighting?

Lighting that borrows from factory and workshop fittings: exposed metal, visible fixings, cage guards, enamel or spun shades and a bulb you are meant to see. The point is honest construction rather than decoration. It reads best against brick, concrete and plain plaster, and it wants 2.4m of ceiling or more to hang properly. Browse the full pendant range for the same shapes in other styles.

What materials define industrial lighting?

Metal, mostly, and warm metal at that. Across the 66 fittings in our industrial range the commonest finishes are heritage brass, aged brass, buckeye bronze and antique brass, with clear or seeded glass where there is a shade. What you will not find is a fabric shade or a moulded plastic diffuser: the material is the design.

What bulb suits an industrial light?

A clear LED filament, and usually an E27, which is the cap on 29 of our 66 industrial fittings, with E14 and G9 covering most of the rest. The bulb is visible by design, so shape matters: a globe or a squirrel cage suits an open frame, and 2700K keeps the filament amber rather than white.

What is the difference between industrial and modern lighting?

What each one hides. Industrial shows the structure, the fixings and the bulb, and none of our 66 industrial fittings has an integrated LED, because the bulb is the design. Modern lighting conceals the source and reduces the fitting to a form, usually with the LED built in. Industrial reads warmer and heavier, modern reads cleaner and lighter.

Does industrial lighting work in a small room?

It can, at a smaller scale. A single caged wall light or a compact spun pendant works in a galley kitchen or a boot room, where the point is character rather than presence. What does not work is a large multi-arm industrial fitting under 2.4m, which crowds the room and puts a bare bulb at eye level.

Which brands do you stock for industrial lighting?

Four cover most of it: Hinkley with 12 fittings, Endon with 10, Novena with 8 and Eichholtz with 6, and the remainder spread across a dozen more. Hinkley and Endon sit at the practical end, Eichholtz at the design-led one. Nearly all carry a 2 year guarantee, which the product page confirms per fitting.

When is industrial lighting the wrong choice?

In a room that needs even, comfortable light. An open frame with a visible bulb produces glare, and a metal shade throws a hard-edged pool, which is fine over an island and tiring in a study. It also sits awkwardly under 2.4m, where a bare bulb ends up at eye level, and in a formal period room the exposed fixings read as a mistake.
