Collingwood Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is Collingwood Lighting known for?

Technical exterior and architectural LED fittings rather than decorative ones. The range is recessed downlights, ground lights, bollards and wall washers, built around sealed integrated LEDs and high IP ratings. We stock 96 Collingwood fittings, of which 25 have an integrated LED and 35 are rated IP65 throughout.
What does Collingwood make?

Four things, mostly. Recessed downlights for interiors and bathrooms, in-ground and walkover lights, bollards for paths and drives, and exterior wall lights. It is a specification range rather than a decorative one, so the choices are about beam angle, IP rating and colour temperature rather than about finish and shape.
What IP ratings does Collingwood offer?

High ones, and stated precisely. 35 of our 96 Collingwood fittings are IP65 throughout, 27 are IP65 from below and IP20 from above, 4 are IP65 from both directions and a handful are IP54 or IP44 from below. That precision is the point: it tells you exactly which face of the fitting is sealed.
What is the difference between IP65 from below and IP65 from above?

Which side of the ceiling is protected. IP65 from below means the visible face resists water jets from inside the room, which is what a bathroom downlight needs. IP65 from both directions adds protection for the body sitting in the void, which matters in a soffit, a canopy or an unheated loft where damp gets at the fitting from behind.
Do Collingwood fittings have integrated LEDs?

Many do. 25 of our 96 have the LED built in and sealed, which is how they achieve their IP ratings, and the rest take a replaceable lamp. A sealed fitting cannot be re-lamped, so you are buying the light source along with the housing and the stated life of the LED becomes part of the decision.
Are Collingwood fittings suitable for outdoors?

A great many are, and the materials say so. The exterior range includes Corten steel, which weathers to a stable rust finish, and 316 marine-grade stainless for coastal use, alongside powder-coated black and graphite. Combined with IP65 as the standard rather than the exception, it is a range built for weather rather than adapted to it.
When is Collingwood the wrong choice?

When you want the fitting to be part of the decoration. This is deliberately anonymous lighting, designed to disappear into a ceiling or a path and let the light do the work. In a room where the light is meant to be looked at, a pendant, a chandelier or a decorative wall light is the right answer and this range is not.
