Track Mounting Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is track lighting?

A powered rail fixed to the ceiling or wall, onto which you clip adjustable heads wherever you want them. One circuit feeds the whole run, so you can light a kitchen, a gallery wall or an office from a single point. All 56 track fittings we stock are Astro, in matt black and matt white, and every one carries a 3 year warranty.

What is the difference between track lighting and fixed spotlights?

Whether the positions are permanent. A spotlight plate is wired to one point and its 3 or 4 heads only swivel where they are. A track lets you slide, add or remove heads anywhere along the rail without touching the wiring, which suits a room whose layout changes or a wall of pictures that will not stay the same. See our full spotlight range.

How do you build up a track run?

Modularly. The system is straight lengths joined with couplers, plus 90 degree corners, T-pieces, end caps and a feed connector, so you draw the shape you need and order the parts. Plan the run before ordering rather than after, because the feed point and the corners determine where the whole thing can go.

How many spotlights can go on one track?

The circuit sets the limit, not the rail. Add up the wattage of the heads you want and keep it well inside the capacity of the supply and any dimmer. With LED heads at around 5 to 8W each that is rarely a problem, and it becomes one quickly with older halogen heads at 50W apiece.

Can track heads be aimed after fitting?

Yes, and it is the main reason to choose track. Each head rotates on the rail and tilts in its yoke, so a run of 6 can be re-aimed in a couple of minutes when the pictures move or the island gets rearranged. Aim them from where people will stand, not from the middle of the room.

Do track heads take standard bulbs?

Some do and some do not. 8 of our 56 track fittings have an integrated LED, and the rest take a replaceable bulb, most commonly GU10, which runs at mains voltage and needs no driver. The product page states which. Where you have a choice, a GU10 head lets you change the beam angle later simply by changing the bulb.

When is track lighting the wrong choice?

In a room where you want the ceiling to disappear. A track is a visible line of metal, and in a low or decorative room it dominates. It is also the wrong answer for general light: track heads are directional, so a track alone leaves the edges of the room dark unless you aim them at the walls.
