Picture Lights

Every home and office has pictures on the walls, whether they are works of art or special family photographs depends on personal taste. The one thing that everyone wants however, is to display these treasures to their very best. What could be better than having a soft light washing over them, enhancing the colours and highlighting features as nothing else can do. The KES Lighting range of picture lights is designed to not only bring out these qualities, but also to be a stylish addition to any room.

Picture frames come in many different materials and colours, which is why we have chosen our selection to enrich and not detract from the artwork itself. Choose from perhaps black, chrome or antique brass, in designs which are suitable for any age or style of room or picture. Affordability is a key issue and we have chosen from makers such as Franklite, Endon, Astro and Impex, all known for their quality and competitive pricing.

Select perhaps the stunning Goya which comes in five different finishes, making it possible to use the same style throughout the home or workplace, while using different finishes to compliment each individual room. We also have low voltage picture lights with an integral transformer, bronzed with mains voltage halogen lamps and also the Astro which is rated IP20 and suitable for any zone three areas.

Picture Lights - Wall Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Are picture lights a good idea?

Yes, for anything worth looking at properly. A picture light puts an even wash across a canvas without the glare of a spot bounced off varnish, and at 3 to 8W it costs almost nothing to leave on. It is the cheapest way to make a hallway feel finished. It is not a substitute for lighting the room.

What size picture light do I need?

Roughly two thirds to three quarters of the width of the picture, including the frame. A 90cm painting takes about a 60cm light. Going wider than the frame spills light onto the wall and shows every bump in the plaster. Our range runs from around 30cm up to 60cm and larger for the Astro and Elstead pieces.

How high should a picture light be fitted?

About 10 to 15cm above the top of the frame, angled down at roughly 30 degrees to the canvas. Any higher and the beam hits the wall above rather than the picture, any lower and the fitting shades the top of the image. Hardwired versions want the cable point set before the picture is hung.

What colour light is best for artwork?

Warm 2700K to 3000K, with a high colour rendering index of 90 or above. Warm light keeps oils and wood frames looking as the artist intended, and a high CRI is what stops reds and skin tones going flat. Avoid 4000K entirely on paintings: it strips the warmth out of everything.

What is the difference between a plug-in and a hardwired picture light?

The cable, and where it shows. A hardwired light runs off a switched point behind the frame and disappears completely. A plug-in trails a flex to the nearest socket and gains you the freedom to move the picture. Of our 62 picture lights, the Astro and Elstead hardwired versions dominate, and battery models need charging often enough to be a nuisance.

Do picture lights damage paintings?

Modern LED ones do not, which is the main reason to choose them. LEDs emit almost no ultraviolet and very little heat, and it is UV and heat that fade pigment and dry out canvas. Of our 62 picture lights, 23 have an integrated LED. If you are lighting anything genuinely valuable, keep levels modest and take advice from a conservator.

When is a picture light the wrong choice?

On glass. A picture light aimed at a glazed or heavily varnished piece reflects straight back at anyone standing in front of it, which is worse than leaving it unlit. Non-reflective glass fixes it, and so does a ceiling spot from 2m back at a shallower angle. Save the picture light for canvas, board and unglazed work. See our full wall light range.
