What height should a floor lamp be?

Between about 1.5m and 1.8m for a standard reading or arc lamp, which puts the bottom of the shade near eye level for someone seated so you see light rather than bulb. Uplighters can go taller, up to 1.9m, because their light goes to the ceiling. Beside a low modern sofa, err towards the shorter end.
Where should a floor lamp go in a room?

Behind or beside a seat, about 30cm to one side rather than directly over a shoulder, so light reaches the page without the reader casting a shadow onto it. The other useful position is a dark corner, where an uplighter bounces light off the ceiling and stops the corner reading as a hole in the room.
