Traditional - Table Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

What are old fashioned lamps called?

It depends on the shape. A tall slim base with a small shade is a candlestick lamp, usually 45 to 60cm tall. A rounded one is a ginger jar or urn lamp. A wide shallow one is a squat base. Column, balustrade and candlestick are the terms used most in the trade for the traditional shapes we stock.

What makes a table lamp traditional rather than modern?

The base and the shade, more than the material. Traditional bases are turned, fluted or moulded rather than geometric, typically 30 to 50cm tall, and the finishes lean warm: antique brass, aged bronze, ceramic and cut crystal. The shade is a fabric empire or drum with a visible trim. A modern lamp shows its structure, a traditional one hides it.

What shade suits a traditional table lamp?

An empire shade in linen or silk, about twice the width of the base and a third of the total height, so a 20cm base takes roughly a 40cm shade. Cream and off-white throw the warmest light. A drum shade works on a plain column base, but on a turned or urn base it reads as a modern shade on an old lamp.

What bulb suits a traditional table lamp?

A warm 2700K bulb, and the cap depends on the fitting: most take E27, and smaller candlestick lamps usually take E14. If the shade is open at the top and the bulb is visible, a clear LED filament in a candle or globe shape looks right. Under a closed fabric shade, an opal bulb gives a softer, more even light.

Can traditional lamps be used in a modern room?

Yes, and it is one of the easier ways to stop a modern room feeling like a showroom. A turned brass base against plain plaster reads as deliberate rather than dated, particularly with a plain shade and a warm 2700K bulb. Use one or two as a counterpoint rather than furnishing the whole room in the same register.

Are traditional table lamps dimmable?

Most are, through the bulb rather than the lamp. Fit a bulb marked dimmable and use a dimmed socket or an inline dimmer on the flex, and expect a floor of around 10% output. Some of ours have a rotary or 3-way switch in the lampholder, which the product page states. A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer will flicker or buzz.

When is a traditional table lamp the wrong choice?

For task lighting. A fabric shade spreads a soft even glow, which is right beside a sofa and wrong over a desk or a workbench, where you want 400 lumens or more that you can aim. Choose a directional task lamp for those, and keep the traditional lamp for atmosphere.
