Wall Lights - Outdoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

What IP rating does an outdoor wall light need?

IP44 as a minimum, IP65 where it is fully exposed. IP44 resists splashing water from any direction and is fine under a porch or an overhang. IP65 is sealed against water jets and is what to choose on an open wall or a coastal elevation. Anything sold for indoor use, whatever it looks like, does not belong outside.
What is the difference between IP44 and IP65?

The second digit, which is the water rating. IP44 withstands splashes from any direction. IP65 withstands low-pressure jets, so it copes with driving rain and being hosed down. Both share a 4 or better for solids, meaning protection against objects above 1mm. In practice, sheltered walls take IP44 and exposed walls take IP65.
Which finish lasts best outdoors?

Solid brass and 316 stainless steel, by a distance. Brass weathers to a soft brown patina rather than corroding, and marine-grade stainless holds up in salt air where standard 304 will pit. Powder-coated aluminium is a good mid-point inland. Whatever the finish, a fitting under a porch will always outlast the same fitting on an exposed wall.
How high should outdoor wall lights be mounted?

Around 1.8 to 2m from the ground, so the fitting sits at or just above head height and lights the ground rather than your eyes. Beside a door, centre it on the top third of the door frame. Along a wall or a drive, space them 3 to 4.5m apart so the pools of light just meet.
Can I get an outdoor wall light with a PIR sensor?

Yes. Many of our outdoor wall lights have a PIR motion sensor built in, which the product page states, and most of those let you set the sensitivity and how long the light stays on. If you prefer the look of a fitting without one, a separate PIR or a dusk-to-dawn photocell can be wired into the circuit instead.
Do outdoor wall lights need to be fitted by an electrician?

In England and Wales, most outdoor electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. That makes new outdoor circuits a job for a qualified electrician who can certify them. Swapping a like-for-like fitting on an existing point is smaller, but the seal and the cable entry still have to be right or water gets in.
When should you not fit an outdoor wall light?

Directly outside a bedroom window, or anywhere it shines onto a neighbour's. Outdoor light travels much further than people expect and a bright fitting on a boundary wall causes more arguments than it solves. Aim light downwards, use warm 2700K rather than cool white, and use the lowest output that does the job.
