What are the best outdoor lights for my home?

The best outdoor light depends on what you need it for. A wall lantern either side of the front door suits most homes, a bollard or spike light works well along a path, and a pendant or flush fitting under a covered porch adds a softer glow. Match the finish to your door hardware, check the IP rating suits its position, and choose warm white LEDs for a welcoming feel rather than a stark white light.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor lighting?

As a general rule, sheltered spots such as a covered porch need at least IP44, while anything exposed to direct rain, wind or splashing, like a wall light on an open elevation, should be IP65 or higher. Fittings rated IP20 to IP23 are for indoor use only and won't survive outside. If you're at all unsure which rating suits your spot, our team or a qualified electrician can confirm before you buy.
Do I need special outdoor lights near the coast?

Yes. Salt air speeds up corrosion, so standard fittings can pit or discolour much faster than they would inland. Look for marine-grade materials such as 316 stainless steel, and keep the IP rating exposed-appropriate (IP65 or higher) for anything on an open wall or facing the sea. How do I illuminate my garden?

Start with fittings attached to the house, wall lights either side of doors and windows, or a ceiling light under a porch, all rated for outdoor use. From there, add bollards or spike lights along paths and borders, and use spotlights to pick out a tree or feature wall. Lighting further out in the garden, along a drive or hedgerow, usually means new cabling, so bring in a qualified electrician for that stage.
Can I wire outdoor lights myself?

Fixed outdoor lighting, anything wired into your home's electrics rather than plugged in, should be installed by a qualified electrician. Outdoor circuits need cable rated for outdoor or underground use, weatherproof connections, and proper circuit protection. Low-voltage, plug-in garden lighting kits are generally simpler and safe to fit yourself. If you're at all unsure, always call in a qualified electrician to check or carry out the work.
What's the difference between dusk-to-dawn and PIR outdoor lights?

A dusk-to-dawn light has a built-in photocell that switches it on automatically as light fades and off again at daybreak, useful for porches and paths you want lit all night. A PIR light uses a motion sensor and only comes on when it detects movement, which makes it better for security or anywhere you don't want a light on constantly. Some fittings combine both features.
Are LED lights good for outdoor use?

Yes, LED is the best choice for outdoor lighting. They're cheaper to run than halogen or incandescent, which matters if a light is on dusk to dawn, and they last far longer, so you're not up a ladder changing bulbs on a cold, wet evening. LEDs also run cooler and come in a wide range of colour temperatures, from warm white for a welcoming glow to cool white for security lighting.
How bright should outdoor lights be?

It depends entirely on the job the light is doing. A patio or porch light for atmosphere can be soft and warm, while a security floodlight over a driveway needs to be much brighter. Dimmable fittings or a two-stage PIR floodlight let you adjust brightness to the moment rather than fixing one level. Keep neighbours in mind too, a light angled well avoids sending glare through someone else's window.
