Help & Advice

What IP rating do I need for bathroom downlights?

It depends which zone the downlight sits in. Inside the bath or shower itself is Zone 0, which needs low voltage lighting (max 12V) rated at least IP67. Directly above the bath, up to 2.25 metres high, is Zone 1, needing at least IP44. Zone 2 covers 0.6 metres beyond that, and continues above Zone 1 right up to a 3 metre ceiling, also IP44 minimum. If you're at all unsure which zone applies, always check with a qualified electrician.

Can I put a downlight in my shower?

Yes, but only a fitting rated for the zone. Directly inside the shower enclosure is Zone 0, which needs low voltage lighting (12V maximum) rated at least IP67, the highest bathroom rating, since it can be exposed to direct water. Just outside the enclosure, within 0.6 metres, is Zone 2 and needs IP44 minimum. Get the zone wrong and you risk water getting into the fitting, so ask a qualified electrician to confirm before you buy or install.

What are the best downlights for a bathroom?

The best bathroom downlight is an LED fitting with the right IP rating for its zone, IP44 for the area around the bath or shower, IP67 for anything directly inside one. Beyond that, look for a warm white finish for a relaxing feel, and consider fire-rated fittings if the ceiling separates you from another room. A slim, trimless design gives the cleanest look if your ceiling can take it.

What is a fire-rated downlight and do I need one?

A fire-rated downlight has a built-in fire-resistant casing that reseals the ceiling once it's fitted. Cutting a hole for any recessed downlight breaks the fire barrier a ceiling is meant to provide, particularly between floors, so building regulations require a fire-rated fitting wherever that barrier needs to be maintained. If you're fitting downlights into a ceiling with a room above, fire-rated is the safe choice, and a qualified electrician can confirm what your specific ceiling needs.

How many downlights do I need for a room?

A rough guide is to divide your room's area in square metres by 1.5 to 2, which gives you an approximate number of downlights. So a 12 square metre bathroom would need around 6 to 8. Space them evenly, roughly 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart, and keep them back from the edge of the ceiling to avoid a spotty look. Task areas like a mirror or shower may need extra.

Are downlights suitable for rooms other than the bathroom?

Yes, downlights work well in kitchens, hallways, living rooms and home offices, anywhere you want clean, even light without a pendant taking up headroom. Outside a bathroom, you don't need the same IP rating, a standard indoor-rated downlight is fine, though fire-rated versions are still worth using wherever the ceiling separates you from a room above. Dimmable options suit living spaces particularly well for changing the mood through the day.

What's the difference between trimless and standard downlights?

A standard downlight has a visible trim or bezel around the edge, sitting slightly proud of the ceiling. A trimless downlight is fitted so the plasterboard is skimmed right up to the edge of the fitting, leaving no visible frame for a seamless, almost invisible finish. Trimless looks cleaner but needs more careful installation and a bit more planning, so it's worth deciding before the ceiling is boarded.

Are downlights dimmable?

Many of our LED downlights are dimmable, but not all, so check the product page before you order if it matters to you. You'll also need a dimmer switch and driver that are compatible with the specific LED module. Mismatched dimmers are a common cause of flickering. If you're planning a dimmable circuit, it's worth confirming compatibility with a qualified electrician before installation.

What colour temperature should I choose for downlights?

For most bathrooms and living spaces, warm white (around 2700K to 3000K) gives a relaxing, flattering glow close to traditional bulb light. Cooler white (4000K) suits kitchens and utility areas where you want crisper, more functional light for tasks. Avoid daylight-range whites (5000K plus) in living spaces, they can feel clinical. Check the Kelvin rating on the product page, and keep it consistent across downlights in the same room.

Can KES quote for a bulk or trade downlight order?

Yes, we quote for trade and contract orders regularly, everything from a handful of downlights for a renovation to hundreds for a new-build or commercial fit-out. Get in touch with your product list or SKUs and quantities and we'll put a quotation together, including trade pricing where it applies. A trade account also makes reordering for future stages of a project straightforward.
