Multi-Arm - Ceiling Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

A fitting whose light points branch out on separate arms from a central body, rather than sitting in one shade. The arms spread light across a room instead of concentrating it, and they give the fitting width, which is why a multi-arm suits a wide room better than a single pendant. We stock 379, led by Lekki, Mantra and Hinkley.

Match the arms to the width. Three suits a fitting up to about 50cm across in a small room, 5 or 6 works in a typical living or dining room, and 8 or more wants a wide room and a ceiling above 2.6m. More arms means more bulbs to change, so count that in: a 12 arm fitting is 12 bulbs.

Formality more than form. A chandelier is usually tiered, taller than it is wide and decorated with crystal or glass. A multi-arm light spreads outward on one level and can be entirely plain. In practice every chandelier is multi-arm, and most multi-arm fittings are not chandeliers.

Small caps, because each arm holds one. E14 covers 107 of our 379, G9 covers 43 and E27 covers 41, with a few older fittings on B22 bayonet. Buy all the bulbs at once and from the same batch, because a single mismatched colour temperature on one arm is glaringly obvious and impossible to ignore afterwards.

Not necessarily. Many multi-arm fittings are convertible, with arms that can be fitted pointing up or down, and the product page states whether yours is. Arms up throws light at the ceiling and gives a softer, more reflected room. Arms down puts light on the table or floor and shows the bulbs, so it wants shades or attractive lamps.

In a narrow room or a hallway. These fittings work by spreading sideways, so in a corridor under 1.5m wide the arms come close to the walls and the whole thing reads as crowded. They are also awkward under 2.4m, where the arms sit at head height. In both cases a flush or semi-flush fitting is the answer.
