Outdoor Lighting - Default Category Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the best light for outside?

The best outdoor light is one its maker approves for exactly where it will go. As a starting point, choose IP44 or better under a porch or eave, and we would choose IP65 or higher for an exposed wall. Nearly half this collection is IP44. Then check the maker's stated use and any coastal restriction before you choose a style. Our guide to outdoor IP ratings explains the numbers.

How do I light my garden?

In layers, starting at the house and working outwards. Wall lights by the doors come first, then bollards or spike lights along paths and borders, then a spotlight or two on a tree or wall to give the garden depth. Spike spots such as the Astro Bayville are rated IP65. We would have a qualified electrician plan any new outdoor cabling; for no wiring at all, see our solar and rechargeable lights.

Can I install outdoor lighting myself?

Sometimes the law allows it, but we would always use a qualified electrician outdoors. In England, replacing an existing light fitting like-for-like is not notifiable, while a new circuit is, and the rules in Wales differ. Outdoor connections also need weatherproofing and suitable circuit protection. More than four in five fittings here with a listed electrical class are Class I, which must be connected to earth, so have the circuit checked first.

What is the best brand of outdoor lights?

The best brand is the one whose fitting suits your house and its exposure, so compare design, dimensions, IP rating, light source and aftercare before the name. Astro has the largest range here, alongside Les Jardins, Norlys, Elstead, Hinkley and Kichler, but range size says nothing about quality. Guarantee terms differ too, from general cover to anti-corrosion or 15-year structural cover, so read what each product page covers.

What are common outdoor lighting mistakes?

The common ones are ignoring a fitting's intended exposure, aiming light into a neighbour's window and overlooking how the light source is replaced. Match the IP rating and the maker's instructions to the spot, including coastal limits: the Astro Portree is IP44, yet excluded within five miles of the coast. If easy maintenance matters, check whether a fitting takes replaceable bulbs or has a serviceable LED module, rather than assuming from whether bulbs are included.

Is warm white or cool white better for outdoor lights?

Warm white, for most houses, in our view. Where a fixed colour temperature is listed in this collection, more than four in five fittings are 3000K warm white, which we find flatters brick, stone and planting. Cool white, 4000K and above, reads more like security lighting, so we would keep it for a yard rather than a front door. Where the colour is lamp dependent, your bulb sets it. More in our warm white vs cool white guide.

Replaceable bulbs or integrated LEDs: which outdoor fitting should I choose?

Choose by how you want to maintain it. Most fittings here list a bulb cap, E27 above all, so you can change brightness or colour later and replace a failed lamp. Integrated LED fittings, a smaller share of this range, may have fixed or adjustable output and colour, so check their controls, dimming compatibility and the maker's replacement guidance on the product page.
