Help & Advice

There are several types of light bulbs, including LED (Light Emitting Diodes), Incandescent, Halogen, CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), and Specialty Bulbs, such as vintage Edison bulbs or candle-shaped bulbs.
The best bulb largely depends on the room and purpose. LED bulbs are often recommended for most household uses due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, and wide range of colour temperatures.
First, check the fixture for any labels or guidelines about bulb type, wattage, and size. Consider the purpose (e.g., reading vs. ambient lighting) and your preferred colour temperature. When in doubt, consult with a lighting specialist.
Many LED bulbs are dimmable, but not all. It's crucial to check the packaging or product description before purchasing. Additionally, using a compatible dimmer switch is essential to ensure smooth operation.
Disposal methods vary by bulb type. Incandescents can often be thrown away with regular trash, while CFLs, which contain a small amount of mercury, should be recycled. LEDs should also be recycled if facilities exist in your area. Always check local regulations.
Wattage can vary greatly depending on the bulb type and its intended use. Common household bulbs might range from 40 watts (for a soft light) to 100 watts (for a bright light). LED bulbs provide the same brightness with much less wattage, e.g., a 10W LED might replace a 60W incandescent.
For a bedroom, soft lighting is often preferred. Something in the range of 40-60 watts (or equivalent lumens in LEDs) usually suffices. If you read in bed, consider a brighter bulb or task lighting.
Living rooms often require brighter lighting, so bulbs ranging from 60-100 watts (or their LED equivalents) are common. However, this can be adjusted based on room size and personal preference.
The energy consumption of a bulb is given by its wattage. For example, a 60W bulb uses 60 watts of energy per hour. LEDs are more efficient: an LED bulb that produces light equivalent to a 60W incandescent may only use about 8-10W.
