Matt Black Modern Outdoor Wall Lights

Textured black, the outdoor default

Half this page is Astro, and nearly all of it is textured black rather than matt: a finish with a slight grain that hides marks and holds its colour outdoors far better than a flat matt. The Mast and Dartmouth are the budget end. The Harvard, Dunbar and Messina are the architectural end.

64 wall lights, from £20, more than half of them under £100.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Black outdoor lights vanish in the day and appear at night, which is exactly what a modern house wants. Choose the shape by the light it makes, not by the fitting: an up and down light like the Dunbar or Ava draws two cones on the render, a lantern like the Harvard glows all round.

Fit them at 1.7 to 1.9m to the centre so the beam grazes the wall rather than shining in the eyes, and space a run of them evenly. That is the detail that separates a designed elevation from a lit one.
