Nickel and steel for a cool front

A small page, because cool metals outdoors need care. Polished nickel on solid brass, as Elstead does it on the St Martins and Mansion House, will hold. Brushed stainless steel, as Astro does it on the Montreal and Ava, is the modern route. Both are metals that stand up to weather.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Polished nickel suits a white stucco or painted house and a black door. Stainless steel suits render, timber cladding and glass. Neither belongs on red brick, where bronze or black will always look better.

Near the sea, choose the brass-based nickel lanterns rather than stainless steel. Ordinary stainless steel will tea-stain in salt air within a couple of years, and marine-grade steel is rare.
