Bronze Table Lamps

Tiffany glass, and the modern alternative

Most of this page is Quoizel's Tiffany-style lamps, hand-pieced glass on a vintage bronze base, and nothing else in the shop lights a room the way they do when they are on. The rest is largely Astro: the Halo portable, the Ascoli desk lamp and the Club, where bronze is a modern finish on a working lamp.

39 table lamps, from £23.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

A Tiffany lamp is a piece of coloured glass first and a light second. Put it where it will be looked at, on a sideboard or a console, and light the room from somewhere else.

The Astro Halo is the one to buy for a bedside if you do not want a cable. It runs on a battery, dims by touch and is genuinely portable at just over half a kilo. It is light bronze, not dark, so expect a warm champagne rather than a chocolate.

Bronze Table Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

How can you tell if a lamp is bronze?

Read the material line on the product page, not just the finish name. On most lamps, 'bronze' describes the colour of the finish: where a material is listed here, it is usually steel, zinc or aluminium, often with art glass or Tiffany glass, and occasionally porcelain. A bronze finish is not solid bronze unless the listing says so. If the metal matters to you, ask our team on +44 (0)24 76 317 022 before you order.

What is the rule for table lamps?

Keep the bottom of the shade at roughly eye level when you sit beside it, whether on a sofa or sitting up in bed, so you see the glow rather than the bulb. Measure your table, then compare the lamp's height on the product page. Some designs here come in more than one size, which helps: the Elstead Alderley Tiffany Table Lamp in Vintage Bronze comes small, medium and large. Treat this as a starting point, not a rule.

Should I choose a fabric shade or a glass shade on a bronze lamp?

We would choose fabric for a softer look and Tiffany or art glass for colour and pattern. A pale fabric shade diffuses the light evenly, as on the Endon Hayfield Table Lamp in Brushed Bronze with Natural Linen Shade, while a Tiffany shade glows in colour, as on the Quoizel Asheville Tiffany Table Lamp in Valiant Bronze. Choose by the job and the room. Browse our Tiffany table lamps.

Do grey and bronze look good together?

Yes, in our view, especially with warm greys, where bronze adds the warmth a grey scheme can lack. The shade does much of the work: an ivory or off-white shade bridges the two, as on the Elstead Amarilli Table Lamp in Bronze with Ivory Shade. In a cool grey room, a pewter or silver lamp may sit more quietly, and this collection includes a few, such as the Stiffel Presidential in Pewter. Compare our chrome and nickel table lamps.

Do bronze table lamps come with bulbs?

Usually not: most are supplied without bulbs, and the product page lists the cap needed, most often E27. Check the title too, because a few bases are sold without a shade, such as the Astro Club Table Lamp in Bronze, marked 'REQUIRES SHADE', and the Astro Park Lane Table Lamp in Bronze without Shade. For dimming, check the dimming line on the product page. Our E27 light bulbs fit most of the lamps here.

What makes a table lamp look expensive?

Proportion first, in our view: a shade wide enough to balance the base, and a lamp in scale with its table. Then detail, such as a quality shade and a finish with depth, like Burnished Bronze on the Elstead Crusader Table Lamp or Old Bronze on the Elstead Provence Desk Lamp. A matching pair either side of a sofa or bed also looks considered. Our traditional table lamps show more.

When is a bronze table lamp the wrong choice?

When the main job is reading or close work and the lamp is chosen mainly for its decorative shade. For reading, we would favour an adjustable task lamp, such as the Astro Imari Desk Lamp in Bronze, whose head can be angled onto a page. A decorative bronze lamp still earns its place for mood beside it. Check each lamp's height and shade against your table before you order.
