What Size Ceiling Light Does My Room Need?

For a pendant or chandelier, add your room's length and width in metres and multiply by 8. That gives a rough diameter in centimetres. For headroom, subtract 2.1 metres from the ceiling height. Flush and semi flush lights can be smaller, so check the type of fitting as well as those two measurements.

Photographs make scale hard to judge. A 700mm pendant can look much like a 400mm one on a screen. Measure the room, mark out the fitting's width and check its shortest drop before shortlisting. Those checks are more useful than guessing from a product photograph.

What diameter suits a pendant or chandelier?

The length-plus-width rule is a traditional visual starting point, expressed here in rounded metric measurements. It is not a standard or a calculation of how much light a room needs.

Room dimensions Approximate pendant or chandelier diameter
2 x 2.5m About 35 to 40cm
2.5 x 3m About 45cm
3 x 3.5m About 50cm
3 x 4m About 55 to 60cm
4 x 4.5m About 65 to 70cm
4 x 6m About 80cm
5 x 7m About 95 to 100cm

A fitting with open arms can look lighter than a solid drum of the same width. Furniture, ceiling height and position affect the result too. We would use the table to make a shortlist, then check the scale in the actual room.

If two sizes both fit comfortably, we usually favour the larger for a decorative centrepiece. Leave enough space around it and check the minimum drop before making that choice.

The Endon Marietta 5 Light Pendant in Antique Brass with Clear Glass is 500mm across, with a 620 to 2000mm adjustable drop, £142.70. It is a modest option beside the 55 to 60cm starting point for a 3 by 4 metre room. Its glass rods give it presence without a solid shade.

Its drop is the deciding measurement over a walkway: 620mm needs a ceiling of at least 2.72 metres to retain our recommended 2.1 metres underneath.

Should a flush light be the same size as a pendant?

It need not be. Flush and semi flush fittings sit close to the ceiling and can suit a room at a smaller diameter than a hanging centrepiece. In an average living room, 400 to 500mm is a useful starting point. Check the shape, light output and other lighting in the room.

The Endon Cordero 3 Light Flush Ceiling Light in Satin Nickel with White Fabric and Frosted Glass is 430mm across and projects 260mm, £83.95. It takes three E27 bulbs, supplied separately. On a 2.4 metre ceiling it leaves 2.14 metres beneath it.

For more width, the Endon Allegra 6 Light Semi Flush in Antique Brass with Clear Spiral Glass is 640mm across with a 330mm projection, £85.75. On a 2.5 metre ceiling it leaves 2.17 metres clear. On a 2.4 metre ceiling it falls short of our 2.1 metre recommendation.

The word 'semi flush' is not a promise of headroom. Read the projection.

How much drop does my ceiling allow?

For a fitting above a walkway, our recommendation is to leave at least 2.1 metres clear beneath its lowest point. This is KES's buying guidance, not a statement of a universal regulation. Allow more if the people using the room or the position of the fitting need it.

Ceiling height Maximum total drop to retain 2.1m clearance Types to consider
2.3m 200mm A sufficiently shallow flush or semi flush
2.4m 300mm Flush or a shallow semi flush
2.5m 400mm Semi flush or a pendant with a short enough minimum drop
2.7m 600mm Any fitting within that drop, including some pendants
3.0m 900mm A wider choice of pendants and chandeliers

A higher ceiling does not automatically make every pendant suitable. The shortest setting must still fit. Also allow for any part of the installation that changes the total drop.

The Marietta 3 Light Semi Flush in Antique Brass with Clear Glass is only 400mm across, but projects 395mm, £126.64. It leaves 2.005 metres under a 2.4 metre ceiling. At 2.5 metres it leaves just 2.105 metres, so measure carefully rather than relying on a rounded ceiling height.

For other shallow options, see our low-ceiling lights guide.

Which measurements should I read on the product page?

Diameter or width tells you how much space the fitting occupies across the room. On a round light, check the widest point of the shade or frame rather than the ceiling plate.

Projection tells you how far a flush or semi flush fitting comes down from the ceiling. This is the measurement to subtract from your ceiling height.

Adjustable drop is normally the overall installed height range of a pendant. Confirm that it includes the fitting itself and its suspension. For a quoted 620 to 2000mm range, the 620mm figure decides whether it fits a low ceiling; 2000mm tells you how far it can reach.

Body height is the height of the decorative part alone. It may be much shorter than the total drop. If the listing does not distinguish them, ask us to check the maker's drawing.

Weight matters for the fixing. Have your installer check that the supporting structure and chosen fixing suit the fitting. Do not assume that a ceiling rose or plasterboard alone will carry a heavy chandelier.

What changes in a long room, over a table or in a stairwell?

In a long narrow room, one central fitting may leave the ends poorly lit even if its diameter suits the rule. We would consider two smaller fittings along the length, or combine a ceiling light with wall lights and lamps. Plan the positions around how the room is used. There is no fixed number of fittings that follows from length alone.

Over a dining table, size the light to the table as well as the room. Check width, sightlines and how people sit and stand. A linear fitting can suit a long rectangular table, while a round pendant can work when its scale suits the table.

The Marietta 4 Light Linear Pendant in Antique Brass with Clear Glass is 1000mm long and 200mm wide, with an adjustable height of 550 to 1930mm, £202.72. Those are the dimensions to mark out over your table before ordering.

Our dining-table hanging guide starts at 76 to 91cm above the tabletop on a standard 2.4 metre ceiling. Check the people using the table and the fitting's design. For proportion, see our dining-table size guide.

In a stairwell, check the void and every nearby landing or stair tread. Maintain headroom where people pass beneath the fitting. Our stairwell sizing guide explains that layout.

The Marietta Grand 7 Light Pendant is 700mm across with a 600 to 2020mm adjustable height, £211.75. That can suit a generous hall or stairwell. It can also overwhelm a smaller hallway. One buyer wrote: 'These unfortunately were too big for our hallway & sizes down to the 5' (Kerry O.). The useful lesson is to measure your own hall rather than rule out a diameter for every hallway.

How can I check the size before ordering?

Mark the diameter on a piece of paper or card and hold it in the intended position. Use a tape measure to check where the lowest point will sit. This gives you a better idea of scale than comparing two cropped product photographs.

Then check bulb requirements and brightness. A larger fitting does not automatically produce more useful light. Include the cost of the bulbs and ask your installer about the fixing.

If you want a second opinion, send us the room dimensions, ceiling height and the fitting you are considering. Include its planned position and what the room is used for.

The short version

  • For a pendant or chandelier, length plus width in metres, multiplied by 8, gives an approximate diameter in centimetres. Use it as a starting point for appearance.
  • Flush and semi flush fittings can be smaller. Check brightness separately from diameter.
  • Above a walkway, subtract 2.1 metres from ceiling height for the maximum drop under our guidance.
  • Check projection or minimum total drop, body height and weight before ordering.
  • Over a table, check the table. In a stairwell, check the void, landings and treads.
  • Mark out the actual size in the room before deciding.

Common questions

What size ceiling light suits a 3 by 4 metre room?

A pendant or chandelier around 55 to 60cm across is a starting point. A flush or semi flush can be smaller. On a 2.4 metre ceiling, keep total drop within 300mm to retain our recommended 2.1 metres underneath. Check output and light distribution too.

Can an adjustable pendant fit a low ceiling?

Only if its minimum total drop fits the available headroom. A 620 to 2000mm pendant cannot go shorter than 620mm within its specified range. Above a walkway, it needs at least 2.72 metres of ceiling height to leave 2.1 metres clear.

Is a larger ceiling light always better?

No. We often favour the larger of two suitable sizes for a centrepiece, but it must fit the space and the available drop. A shallow drum and an open chandelier can look quite different at the same diameter. Check the actual shape and brightness.
