Gold overhead, and how much of it

A gold or brass ceiling light does more work than any other fitting in the room, because it is the one you see from every seat. Satin and brushed finishes sit quietly. Polished gold and crystal do not, and are not meant to.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Decide first whether you want the fitting to be seen or the light to be seen. A Cordero flush in gold effect is there to light a bedroom and stay out of the way. A Toulouse 12 light or a New York chandelier is there to be looked at, and needs the ceiling height to do it: allow 2.1m of headroom under anything that hangs.

Match the metal to what is already in the room. Satin gold and satin brass live happily together. Polished gold beside antique brass looks like two different decisions. If the door handles are brushed, buy brushed.
