Gold overhead, and how much of it

A gold or brass ceiling light does more work than any other fitting in the room, because it is the one you see from every seat. Satin and brushed finishes sit quietly. Polished gold and crystal do not, and are not meant to.

399 pieces, from a flush fitting at £32 to a Schonbek chandelier. The Endon Cordero and Toulouse sit at the top of this page because they are the ones that sell.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Decide first whether you want the fitting to be seen or the light to be seen. A Cordero flush in gold effect is there to light a bedroom and stay out of the way. A Toulouse 12 light or a New York chandelier is there to be looked at, and needs the ceiling height to do it: allow 2.1m of headroom under anything that hangs.

Match the metal to what is already in the room. Satin gold and satin brass live happily together. Polished gold beside antique brass looks like two different decisions. If the door handles are brushed, buy brushed.

Brass and Gold Ceiling Lights

Brass has quietly become the finish of the decade in British homes, and it is not hard to see why. It warms a room in a way chrome never manages, it flatters both a Georgian hallway and a new-build kitchen, and it ages into something better rather than something tired.

Antique, satin and polished, and why the difference matters

Not all brass is the same, and the label on the box is worth reading. Antique and aged brass are darker and softer, with a deliberate patina that suits period rooms and anything with a bit of history. Satin and brushed brass sit in the middle, matt rather than shiny, which is why they have become the safe choice for kitchens. Polished brass and gold effect are the brightest of the three and read as a statement rather than a neutral.

What is in this collection

Pendants, flush and semi-flush fittings, chandeliers and spotlights in brass, gold and gilded finishes, from Endon, Schuller, Diyas and Elstead, among others. The Endon Toulouse and Marietta families run right through it, which is useful if you want the same look in three rooms without three different fittings.

If you are matching brass across a whole room, our advice is to pick one family and vary the format rather than chase an exact finish match between brands. Two makers' idea of 'antique brass' rarely lines up, and a deliberate mix reads better than a near miss.

Brass and Gold Ceiling Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

We think so, and the more useful question is which brass. For a period room we would choose gold with crystal, as on the Diyas Alexandra designs. For a lighter, more modern look we would choose a softer tone, such as the Hinkley Spyre 6 light chandelier in Champagne Gold or the Endon Toulouse in satin gold with ribbed glass. Browse our brass and gold chandeliers.

Usually a flush or semi-flush fitting. As a starting point, leave about 2.1m of clear headroom where people walk, measured to the lowest point of the light; over a dining table, where nobody walks beneath, a pendant can hang lower. Check each pendant's minimum drop on the product page. Some designs come both ways: the Endon Cordero is made as a 3 light pendant and a 3 light flush, both in Gold Effect.

Here and in our antique brass pendant lights, which gathers antique and aged brass pendants in one place. Makers name these darker tones differently, so look beyond 'antique brass' to finishes such as Distressed Gold on the Gilded Nola Arabella or Gold and Bronze on the Feiss Kelham Hall. Our team on +44 (0)24 76 317 022 can compare finishes before you order.

Mostly the colour of the finish. Brass tones tend to run warmer and browner, gold finishes yellower and brighter. Neither word tells you the metal underneath: titles such as 'Gold Leaf' on the Endon Delphine and 'Brushed Gold Plated' on the Novena Garetta describe a surface finish. A brass finish is not solid brass unless the listing says so, so check the material line on the product page where the maker gives one.

Do not use an IP20 fitting where bathroom-zone rules require water protection. Most rated fittings in this collection are IP20, although some, such as the Diyas Coniston in French Gold, are IP44. A missing rating does not establish suitability, and the finish does not determine it. Ask a qualified electrician to check the intended position, water exposure and the manufacturer's installation instructions, or start with our bathroom lights.

White or clear for most rooms, in our view. White fabric and gloss white glass soften brass and diffuse the light, as on the Endon Cordero and Endon Oscar. Clear and ribbed glass show off the metal and the bulb, as on the Endon Toulouse. For a darker, moodier scheme we would choose smoked or amber glass, as on the Eichholtz Verbier and Feiss Kelham Hall, and crystal for traditional gold designs such as the Diyas Alexandra.

Many can, but how depends on the light source. Most fittings here list an E14, E27 or G9 cap, and many say 'Dimmable Lamps Required', so they dim only with dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer. Those with built-in LEDs, a smaller share of the range, need the dimming control or driver the maker specifies, and some are non-dimmable. Check the dimming line on the product page, and ask a qualified electrician about an existing dimmer.
