Brass and Gold Outdoor Lighting

Brass outside gets better, not worse

Solid brass is the one outdoor finish that improves with weather. Raw and natural brass darken and mark over a couple of winters, which is the point of buying it. Astro's Homefield, Harvard and Kos are the modern end. Navigator's Tiller and Horatio are the ship's lantern end.

62 pieces, from £39, two thirds of them Astro or Navigator.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Do not lacquer it and do not expect it to stay showroom bright. If you want brass that stays yellow, buy a coated finish and accept that it will need replacing before solid brass would.

A porch pendant like the Homefield needs a genuine porch: 1.85m of chain drop means a low doorway is out. For an exposed wall, choose a wall light rated IP44 or better and mount it just above head height so the lamp is out of the eyeline.

Brass and Gold Outdoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

Is brass good for outdoor lighting?

Yes, if the fitting is made and rated for outdoor use and you choose a finish whose ageing suits you. Every light here with a listed IP rating is IP44 or higher, the usual minimum for a sheltered spot. A rating covers water and dust, not salt air or weathering, so also check the maker's intended use on the product page. Our guide to outdoor IP ratings explains the numbers.

Solid brass or a brass finish: which outdoor light should I choose?

Choose by how much change you will accept, because both are here. Navigator's fittings, such as the Cabin porthole bulkhead, are solid brass in a raw finish, and their product pages say it will darken and mark with age. The Astro Montreal Oval Coastal is stainless steel finished in brushed brass, with a 10 year guarantee. Neither choice promises a longer life, so compare each maker's intended use and guarantee terms.

Will my brass outdoor light change colour?

It depends on the finish, so check the product page and the maker's care instructions. Raw, unlacquered brass is meant to age: the Navigator Tiller's product page says its solid brass will darken and mark over time, and we would let it weather. On a coated or brass-effect finish, follow the maker's care instructions and avoid metal polish unless the maker allows it.

How to clean outdoor brass lights?

Gently: switch off, let the fitting cool, then use a soft dry cloth with no abrasives, and follow the maker's care instructions for anything more. Harsh products can cost you cover as well as finish: Kichler's 5 year anti-corrosion guarantee on the Bay Shore excludes fittings cleaned with an aggressive cleaner. Wipe glass panels the same careful way.

How do I choose the brightness of a brass outdoor light?

By the bulb's lumens, because with most fittings here the output is set by the bulb you choose, not the brass. Nearly all are supplied without bulbs and list a cap instead, most often E27, while the Astro Jura spike and Gramos ground lights take GU10. Watts measure consumption, so compare lumens and stay within the maximum wattage on the product page. Browse our E27 light bulbs.

When is a brass outdoor light the wrong choice?

When the position is harsher than its maker allows, and near the sea that is the usual catch. The Astro Portree is solid brass and IP44, yet is excluded within five miles of the coast, while the Astro Montreal Round 300 is sold as a coastal wall light. An IP rating covers water and dust only, not salt air, frost or condensation, so check each product page for its intended use and location limits.

What guarantee comes with a brass outdoor light?

It depends on the maker, from 1 year on Navigator's raw brass fittings to 10 years on Astro's Coastal designs, and some carry a 5 year anti-corrosion guarantee. Read what each covers and excludes on the product page, because anti-corrosion terms can rule out coastal locations or harsh cleaning. Treat a guarantee as purchase cover, not a forecast of how long the light will last.
