Brass and Gold Wall Lights

Gold on the wall, from picture light to sconce

This page runs from the practical to the decorative: Elstead and Interiors 1900 picture lights in polished and brushed brass, Astro's Roma for a bathroom, and then the Hinkley Spyre 2, the Diyas Alexandra and the Kichler Mona for walls that want a piece of jewellery.

107 wall lights, from £25.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Wall lights are the fitting most often bought one at a time and regretted. Buy them in pairs, either side of a chimney breast, a bed or a mirror, and the room looks designed rather than furnished.

Mount at 150 to 170cm to the centre for a shaded or uplighting wall light. A picture light is the exception. It is mounted for the frame, and the Chawton or Alton needs its arm to clear the top of the picture by a few centimetres.

Brass and Gold Wall Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the difference between a wall light and a sconce?

None, in practice: a sconce is a wall light. The word once meant a wall-mounted candle holder, and it still tends to describe the decorative kind, with arms, candle bulbs or a small shade, rather than a plain wall washer. For a pair either side of a mirror, fireplace or bed, we would look at twin-light designs such as the Diyas Alexandra Small 2 Light or the Masiero Crek Twin.

What is the best wall sconce?

The one built for the job it has to do. Beside a bed, we would choose one with its own switch, such as the Hinkley Clarke with a pull switch or the Diyas Zinta 2 light switched wall light, so you can turn it off without getting up. Over a painting, choose a picture light. In a bathroom, choose a design whose IP rating and maker's instructions suit the position.

Can I match brass wall lights to a brass ceiling light?

Yes, and buying both from the same range gives you the best chance. The Diyas Coniston comes as a 4 light wall light and a 5 light ceiling light, both in French Gold, and the Endon Delphine as a wall light and a flush ceiling light, both in Gold Leaf. A shared range improves the match but does not guarantee it, so ask our team if it matters. See our brass and gold ceiling lights.

What not to clean brass with?

Abrasive polish, wire wool, scouring pads or harsh sprays. Some wall lights carry a painted or plated surface, such as the Feiss Fusion in Painted Natural Brass, and abrasives can wear through it. Switch off, let the light cool and use a soft dry cloth, following the maker's care instructions. Dust a fabric shade, such as the ivory linen on the Hinkley Clarke, gently rather than wetting it, unless its maker says it can be cleaned.

What to use instead of sconces?

A picture light, if you want a glow on the wall without the shape of a sconce, or table lamps if there is no wiring in the wall. A picture light is a slim fitting that washes light over art, shelves or panelling, and this collection has several in brass, such as the Elstead Chawton and the Astro Renoir 520. Browse our picture lights. We recommend a qualified electrician for any wired wall light.

Do brass wall lights come with bulbs?

Usually not: most are supplied without bulbs, and each product page lists the cap and number needed, most often E14, G9 or E27. A few include G9 LED bulbs or have integrated LEDs. If you plan to dim them, check the dimming line as well, because some need dimmable bulbs and some a trailing-edge dimmer. Our E14 and E27 bulb guide explains the screw caps.

When is a brass wall light the wrong choice?

In a bathroom zone or on an outside wall, unless the maker rates and approves it for that position. Zones 1 and 2 need at least IPX4, and designs such as the Diyas Coniston 4 Light Wall Light in French Gold are IP44, but a missing rating does not establish suitability, so check the maker's instructions too. For a porch or garden wall, choose from our brass and gold outdoor lighting, and we recommend a qualified electrician.
