Bronze Ceiling Lights

American bronze, British ceilings

Bronze ceiling lights are where the American houses live. Kichler, Hinkley and Quoizel between them make up more than two fifths of this page, in finishes called Mission, Regency and Palladian bronze that are all darker and warmer than they sound. The Endon Belle with crystal and the Astro Ascoli spotlights hold the British end.

254 fittings, from £27.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Bronze is not brown. Most of these finishes are a near-black with a warm undertone that only shows when the lamp is on, so a bronze fitting on a dark ceiling will read as black from the doorway. That is fine if you want the light without the fitting. Choose a crystal piece like the Belle if you want both.

Elstead adapts the American brands for the UK, so the lamp holders are E14 and E27 rather than the American sizes. Buy the lamps here, not from an American listing.

Bronze Ceiling Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Which is better, bronze or brass?

Neither is better; they suit different rooms. Bronze finishes are darker and browner, and in our view they ground a pale ceiling and sit well in period and rustic rooms, while brass reads brighter and more golden. Here 'bronze' usually names the finish rather than the metal: where a material is listed, it is most often steel, iron or aluminium. Compare our brass and gold ceiling lights.
Are bronze light fixtures in style?

We think so, because bronze suits both period and modern rooms. For a traditional scheme we would choose a classic design such as the Elstead Cromwell 8 Light Chandelier in Old Bronze, or a Tiffany fitting like the Quoizel Inglenook in Valiant Bronze. For a cleaner, modern line we would choose the Hinkley Lanza Semi Flush in Brushed Bronze. Choose the shape for the room first, then the bronze tone.
What colour goes with oil rubbed bronze?

Warm, soft colours, in our view: creams, warm whites, stone, sage and deep green, with natural wood. Oil rubbed bronze is usually a very dark brown, as on the Hinkley Hadley 3 Light Flush Ceiling Light, so on a white ceiling it reads as a strong outline. To soften it, we would choose bronze with fabric, such as the Endon Hayfield in Brushed Bronze with Natural Linen.
Which bronze ceiling light suits a low ceiling?

Usually a flush or semi-flush fitting. As a starting point, leave about 2.1m of clear headroom where people walk, measured to the lowest point of the light and checked against each pendant's minimum drop. Some designs come all three ways: the Feiss Fusion 3 Light is made as a pendant, a semi-flush and a flush ceiling light, all in Grecian Bronze. See our semi-flush ceiling lights.
What size bronze ceiling light do I need?

One in scale with the room and the ceiling height, so check the diameter and drop on each product page before you choose. Several designs here come in more than one size: the Hinkley Cello in bronze is listed at 629mm high as a 6 light and 1,092mm as a 15 light, so you can match one design to different rooms. For a large or tall room, browse our extra large pendants.
Which bronze ceiling light works in a kitchen, dining room or living room?

Spotlights or pendants in a kitchen, a pendant or chandelier over a dining table, and a semi-flush or chandelier in a living room, depending on the height. Over a table, where nobody walks beneath, a fitting can hang lower. For kitchen worktops, a multi-head design such as the Astro Ascoli Triple Round 3 Light Spotlight in Bronze puts three spotlights on one fitting. For an island, browse our kitchen island lights.
When is a bronze ceiling light the wrong choice?

Over a bath or shower, unless the maker rates and approves it for that position. Most ceiling lights here with a listed rating are IP20, which gives no protection against water, and Zones 1 and 2 need at least IPX4. Some are made for bathrooms, such as the Astro Mashiko 400 Round Bathroom Ceiling Light in Bronze, but check its rating and the maker's instructions, and ask a qualified electrician. Our bathroom zones guide explains more.
