Bronze Pendant Lights

The cage, the drum and the globe

Bronze pendants come in three shapes. The open cage, like the Hinkley Fulton, which is all frame and no glass. The shaded drum, like the Endon Hayfield and Indara, which is soft light through linen. And the glass globe, the Feiss Adams or the Astro Veo, which sits somewhere between.

147 pendants, from £23.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

A cage pendant shows its lamps, so buy the lamps as carefully as the fitting. A clear filament LED in an open cage is the whole look, and a frosted lamp kills it.

The Fulton Large at 85cm across is an entrance hall piece and wants a double-height space. For a standard 2.4m ceiling the Hayfield or a single Daley is the right scale, and a shaded pendant is kinder over a bed than a cage.

Bronze Pendant Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Can I mix oil rubbed bronze and black fixtures?

Yes, and they sit well together, because dark bronze is close to black but reads warmer. We would let one finish lead and repeat the other at least twice, such as bronze pendants over an island with black handles and wall lights. For the closest partner to black, choose a dark tone such as the Endon Belle 8 Light Pendant Light in Dark Bronze with Clear Crystal. Compare our matt black pendant lights.

What does dark bronze look like?

A deep brown that can read almost black from across a room and shows more warmth up close. Bronze names vary widely between makers, which matters when you are matching: this collection runs from Dark Antique Bronze on the Endon Daley to the lighter Champagne Bronze on the Kichler Larousse. Look closely at the product photos and, if the match matters, ask our team to compare finishes before you order.

Should I hang a linear pendant or a row of pendants over an island?

A row of single pendants for a classic look, a linear design for one clean line over a long island. As a starting point, hang them about 75 to 90cm above the worktop, with 60 to 75cm between centres, adjusted for the fitting's size and your sightlines. The Kichler Riven LED Linear Pendant in Champagne Bronze is a linear option; the Astro Veo 180 in Bronze with Duplex Glass Shade suits a row. Browse our kitchen island lights.

How do I get the drop right on a bronze pendant?

Measure your ceiling height, compare it with the minimum and maximum drop on the product page, and adjust only as the maker's instructions allow. As a starting point, keep about 2.1m of clear headroom where people walk; over a table or island it can hang lower. If no drop works, a convertible design helps: the Feiss Valentina 4 Light is sold as a pendant or semi-flush ceiling light in Oxidised Bronze.

Will one bronze pendant light a whole room?

Whether one pendant is enough depends on the room, its total light output and the shade, so plan wall lights or lamps where needed. A glass shade lets light through its sides, as on the Astro Veo 230 Pendant Light in Bronze with Duplex Glass Shade, while fabric and metal shades soften or direct it. E27 is the most common cap here, so with many pendants you choose the output when you choose the bulb.

Do bronze pendants take standard bulbs?

Most do, usually E27 or E14, and bulbs are generally not supplied, so check the cap and number on the product page. A minority have built-in LEDs instead; these need the dimming control or driver the maker specifies, and some are not dimmable. For bulb fittings, dimming needs dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer as well as a fitting that allows it. Our E14 and E27 guide explains the caps.

When is a bronze pendant the wrong choice?

On a low ceiling where people walk underneath, or over a bath or shower without the right rating. Most pendants here with a listed IP rating are IP20, which gives no protection against water, and a missing rating does not make a fitting suitable. For a low hallway or landing, choose a flush or semi-flush design from our bronze ceiling lights instead, and ask a qualified electrician about any bathroom position.
