Bronze Wall Lights

Bronze on the wall, two ways

Bronze wall lights split into two camps. The Astro Ascoli and Mondrian are precise, modern pieces where bronze is a quiet alternative to black. The Hudson Valley Bowery and the Endon Indara are traditional, a bronze arm carrying a linen or off-white shade.

72 wall lights, from £32, more than a third of them Astro.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Bronze is the finish for a wall that is not white. Against oak panelling, a deep green or a plaster pink it reads as warmth. Against brilliant white it can look like a shadow.

Reading lights and picture lights want to be mounted for the job, not the look: an Ascoli reading light at shoulder height beside the bed, a Mondrian picture light so its arm clears the frame. A shaded light like the Bowery goes at eye height, about 150cm from the floor.

Bronze Wall Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Is aged brass the same as bronze?

No, although the two can look close. Aged and antique brass finishes are darkened golds, while bronze finishes run browner, from Brushed Bronze to the deep Dark Bronze of the Endon Belle. This collection includes a few aged brass designs beside the bronzes, such as the Mitzi Evie and the Hudson Valley Persis, so read the finish in each title. For a warmer gold, browse our brass and gold wall lights.

What type of lighting is best in a bathroom?

Layered light: a ceiling fitting for general light, plus wall lights by the mirror, each suited to its zone. Within Zones 1 and 2 a fitting needs at least IPX4, and some bronze wall lights here are made for bathrooms, such as the Astro Versailles 400 LED Bathroom Wall Light in Bronze. Outside the zones no rating is legally required, but follow the maker's stated suitability. Our bathroom zones guide explains more.

What is the most flattering lighting for a bathroom?

Light from both sides of the mirror at roughly face height, in our view, rather than only from above, which casts shadows under the eyes and chin. A matching pair of wall lights does this well, such as two Astro Versailles 250 Bathroom Wall Lights in Bronze. There is no washbasin zone in the wiring regulations, so the rating you need depends on the distance from the bath or shower. We recommend a qualified electrician to fit them.

What colour temperature suits bronze wall lights?

We prefer warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, for a warm appearance alongside bronze. Where a bronze wall light here lists a fixed colour temperature, it is 2700K or 3000K. Most take a standard bulb, such as E14, E27, G9 or GU10, so you choose the colour when you buy the bulb; check the kelvin figure on the box. Our guide to warm white and cool white LED explains the scale.

Can I get bronze wall lights with their own switch?

Yes, some have a switch on the fitting, which is handy beside a bed or a reading chair. The Endon Daley Switched Wall Light in Dark Antique Bronze and the Astro Ascoli Single Switched Reading Light are two examples, and the Astro Leo Recessed Switched LED Reading Light in Bronze is a recessed design. Only some are switched, so check the product page. Browse our bedroom lighting for more ideas.

Can I match bronze wall lights to a bronze ceiling light?

Yes, and choosing from the same range gives the closest match. The Hinkley Lanza comes as a 2 light wall light and a semi-flush ceiling light, both in Brushed Bronze, and the Kichler Lacey as a wall light and semi-flush ceiling lights in Mission Bronze. Bronze varies widely between makers, so a shared range improves the match without guaranteeing it. See our bronze ceiling lights.

When is a bronze wall light the wrong choice?

On an outside wall, unless the maker rates and approves it for outdoor use. Most bronze wall lights here with a listed rating are IP20, which gives no protection against water, and only a few are marked for exterior use. An IP rating also says nothing about frost, condensation or coastal air, so follow the maker's stated use. Browse our outdoor wall lights, and ask a qualified electrician to fit them.
