Ceiling Lights - Outdoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

Outdoor ceiling lights work well anywhere with some shelter, a front porch, a covered terrace, or fixed into the soffit under an overhanging roofline. Surface-mounted flush fittings sit neatly against a low ceiling, while a small pendant can add character to a taller porch. Wherever you fit one, check the IP rating matches how exposed the spot is to wind-blown rain.

For most porches, a flush or semi-flush fitting close to the ceiling looks tidiest and keeps clear of anyone's head at the door. If your porch has more height, a small outdoor pendant makes more of a statement. Pick a finish that matches your door furniture, and go for IP44 as a minimum if the porch is open-sided rather than fully enclosed. Browse our porch ceiling lights for the full range.

A porch light under a proper roof, sheltered from driving rain, needs at least IP44. If the porch is open-sided, or the light sits in a soffit exposed to wind and spray, go for IP65 to be safe. This is the key difference from an indoor ceiling light, which typically has no water protection at all and isn't safe to use outside. If you're unsure, ask our team before you order.

Yes, as long as it's specifically designed and IP-rated for outdoor use, a standard indoor pendant will let water into the fitting. Outdoor pendants are sealed against moisture and usually sit under a covered porch roof rather than somewhere fully exposed to the weather. Check the drop matches your porch height so it clears the doorway comfortably, and confirm the IP rating suits how sheltered the spot is.

Many of our customers do, and it's easy to see why. A PIR sensor means the light comes on automatically as you approach the door, which is useful for finding your keys and doubles up as a small security measure. The trade-off is less control over exactly when it lights up, so if you want it on all evening regardless, a dusk-to-dawn or manually switched light suits better.

Yes, LEDs are the best choice for a porch or outdoor ceiling fitting. They run cool, which matters in an enclosed flush or soffit fitting where heat has nowhere to escape, and they're far more energy efficient over a fitting that's likely to be on every evening. Look for a warm white LED for a welcoming entrance rather than a harsh, clinical light by the front door.

Often yes, if you're swapping like-for-like on an existing outdoor-rated point. It's still electrical work though, so the power needs to be safely isolated first, and if the new fitting is heavier, needs a different connection, or you're at all unsure, it's best left to a qualified electrician. Anything beyond a straightforward swap, including any new wiring, should always go to an electrician.

Usually not, most outdoor ceiling and porch lights are sold as the fitting only, so you'll need to add the right bulb separately. Each product page lists exactly which bulb type and fitting the light takes, so check there before you order. If a specific light does include bulbs, that will be stated clearly on its product page.
