How can you tell if a chandelier is real crystal?

Weight, sound and edge. Lead crystal is denser than glass, so it feels heavy and cool in the hand, it rings for a second or two when you tap it rather than giving a dull tap, and the cut edges are sharp and precise instead of slightly rounded. Held to the light, crystal splits it into colour where glass mostly does not.
What is the difference between lead crystal and standard glass?

Lead oxide. Full lead crystal contains at least 24% of it, which raises the refractive index so the piece throws more sparkle and colour, and makes it heavier and easier to cut cleanly. Ordinary glass has none. Both look similar switched off, and the difference is obvious the moment a bulb is behind them.
What size crystal chandelier do I need?

Add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number in inches as the diameter. A 14ft by 16ft room takes roughly a 30in, or 76cm, chandelier. Over a dining table, size to the table instead and aim for about two thirds of its width, hung 70 to 90cm above the top.
How do you clean a crystal chandelier?

Switch it off, let it cool, and wipe the drops with a soft lint-free cloth barely damp with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, drying each one as you go. Never spray a cleaner at a lit or warm fitting, and never put the drops in a dishwasher. Once or twice a year is enough in a normal room.
What bulbs do crystal chandeliers take?

Most take the small E14 cap, which is by far the commonest across the 490 crystal chandeliers we stock, with G9 capsules next. Choose a warm 2700K bulb: cool white kills the amber sparkle that the crystal is there to produce. Where the bulb is visible between the drops, a clear candle LED looks right.
Can a crystal chandelier go in a bathroom?

Not unless it is rated for it, and most are not. The overwhelming majority of our crystal chandeliers are IP20, meaning no protection against water at all, so they belong in a bedroom or a hall rather than above a bath. Bathroom fittings need an IP rating suited to the zone, and the work is notifiable under Part P.
When is a crystal chandelier the wrong choice?

Under a low ceiling, and over anything you eat at every day. A chandelier needs about 2.4m of ceiling to look deliberate rather than crammed, and 2.1m of clear headroom anywhere people walk. Above a busy family table it also collects steam and dust faster than anyone wants to clean it.
