Fans - Indoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

Are ceiling fans with lights out of date?

No, and the technology has moved on. Current fans run DC motors, which the makers rate at up to 70% less power than the older AC type and which are noticeably quieter, and most now carry a dimmable integrated LED and a remote. What dated was the 5-blade builder fan in brushed steel, not the idea of moving air.
Which way should a ceiling fan turn in winter?

Clockwise, and slowly. Running clockwise on the lowest speed pulls cool air up the middle of the room and pushes the warm air trapped at ceiling level back down the walls, which makes a heated room feel warmer without a draught. Switch it back to anticlockwise in summer, when you want the downdraught you can feel.
What size ceiling fan do I need?

Match the blade span to the room. Up to about 3.5m square, a 42in fan is enough. Between 3.5m and 5m, choose 48 to 52in. Larger than that and you are better with two smaller fans than one huge one, because a single fan only moves the air directly beneath it.
Can a ceiling fan be fitted to a sloped ceiling?

Usually yes, with the right mount. Most fans accept an angled bracket rated for a pitch of roughly 15 to 30 degrees depending on the model, and the specification states the maximum. You also need enough drop rod that the blade tips clear the slope on the low side. Check the stated pitch before ordering rather than after.
Do ceiling fan lights take normal bulbs?

It depends on the model. Many take a standard E27 or E14 cap, so any bulb of the right size and wattage works, while a growing number have an integrated LED that is not replaceable. The product page states which. If you want to dim it, check that the fan's own control supports dimming rather than assuming the bulb decides.
What is the difference between an AC and a DC ceiling fan?

The motor, and you hear the difference. A DC motor draws up to 70% less power, runs close to silent on low speed and usually offers 6 speeds and a reverse function from a remote. An AC motor is cheaper, typically gives 3 speeds and a wall control, and hums faintly. For a bedroom, buy DC.
When should you not fit a ceiling fan?

When the ceiling is under about 2.3m. Blades need roughly 2.1m of clearance beneath them to be safe and comfortable, and a low ceiling also makes the strobing shadow across the room much more noticeable. In a low room, a wall or pedestal fan is the better answer, and neither needs an electrician.
