Floor Lamps - Indoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

Between about 1.5m and 1.8m for a standard reading or arc lamp, which puts the bottom of the shade near eye level for someone seated so you see light rather than bulb. Uplighters can go taller, up to 1.9m, because their light goes to the ceiling. Beside a low modern sofa, err towards the shorter end.

Behind or beside a seat, about 30cm to one side rather than directly over a shoulder, so light reaches the page without the reader casting a shadow onto it. The other useful position is a dark corner, where an uplighter bounces light off the ceiling and stops the corner reading as a hole in the room.

Which way the light goes. An uplighter throws everything at the ceiling, so the room gets soft reflected light with no glare and nothing you can read by. A reading lamp aims down through a shade or an adjustable head onto an area of perhaps 1m across. A living room usually wants 1 of each rather than 2 of either.

Usually E27, which covers 62 of our 221 floor lamps, with E14 at 20 and G9 at 16, and 15 having an integrated LED. Choose 2700K for atmosphere. If the lamp is for reading, look for a bulb giving 400 lumens or more, since anything less means you have bought a decorative lamp and called it a reading light.

400 lumens or more falling on the page, which for a shaded lamp means a bulb of roughly 600 to 800 lumens once the shade has taken its share. Below that, most people unconsciously lean in and end up with a sore neck. An adjustable head does more than raw output, because you can put the light where the book is.

Living rooms and bedrooms first, then a landing or a home office. A floor lamp is the answer wherever you want light at seated height and there is no table to put a lamp on, which describes most sofa ends. In a dining room it is usually wrong, since the light needs to be over the table. Our table lamps cover the rest.

On a route people walk, and in a small room already full of furniture. A floor lamp has a base and a trailing flex, and in a doorway or beside a stair it is a trip hazard rather than a design decision. Where the floor is genuinely short of space, a wall light at the same height does the same job.
