What are the three main types of indoor lighting?

Ambient, task and accent. Ambient is the general light you see by, usually from the ceiling. Task is aimed light for reading, cooking or working. Accent is narrow light on a picture or an alcove, and the usual guide is to run it about 3 times brighter than the ambient level around it. A room with all 3 feels designed.
What is the 3 lighting rule?

That every room carries all 3 layers, ambient, task and accent, rather than relying on one fitting. It is the most useful idea in domestic lighting because it explains why a bright room can still feel wrong. If a room feels flat, it almost always has plenty of ambient light and nothing else.
How do I plan lighting for a whole house?

Room by room, starting with what happens in it. Note where people sit, read, cook and put things down, then place task light there first, ambient second, accent last. A main room usually ends up with 3 or 4 separately switched groups, and deciding that early is what lets one room be three rooms across a day. We do lighting plans, so bring yours in.
What colour temperature should I use in each room?

2700K almost everywhere. It is the warm white of a filament bulb and it suits living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and dining rooms. Go to 3000K in kitchens and bathrooms, where a slightly crisper light helps at a worktop or a mirror. Keep 4000K for a garage, a utility or a workshop, and mix nothing within one room.
How many lumens does a room need?

A rough guide is 300 to 400 lumens per square metre in a kitchen, 200 to 300 in a living room and 100 to 200 in a bedroom. A 4m by 4m living room therefore wants somewhere around 4,000 lumens in total across all its fittings, not from one. Spreading that across several sources always beats one very bright light.
What is the difference between lumens and watts?

Lumens measure light, watts measure electricity. The old habit of buying by wattage worked when every bulb was a filament, and it stopped working with LED: a 7W LED and a 60W incandescent both give roughly 800 lumens. Buy on lumens for brightness and kelvin for colour, and treat the wattage as nothing more than a running cost.

A single 1,000 lumen pendant lights the floor, shadows faces from above and leaves the edges of the room dark, which is why so many rooms feel unfinished after dark despite being bright.
