Matt black does one of two things. Against a dark ceiling it vanishes and you see only the light. Against pale plaster it draws a hard graphic line.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Black is the safest modern finish and the easiest to get wrong, because matt, textured and satin are three different things in a photograph and obviously different on a wall.

Textured black is the one to choose outdoors: the finish holds up better and it hides the marks that a flat matt shows after a winter.

Indoors, keep it away from a room that is already dark and short of daylight, where a black fitting simply disappears and does no work at all.
