Black pendants, and the glass that saves them

A black pendant on its own can be a hard, flat thing. The ones that work pair the black with something that catches light: ribbed glass, smoked glass, a brass rod or a spun metal shade. That is why Schuller's Norma and Dark families lead this page.

138 pendants, from £48, more than a third of them Schuller.

What we'd tell you in the showroom

Over a dining table, hang the lowest point about 80cm above the surface and no lower. A cluster like the Norma looks best when the staggered drops can be read, so give it a table to hang over rather than a walkway.

Check the drop before you order. Most of these adjust at installation, the Norma from 85cm to 240cm, but a fixed-rod pendant does not, and a fixed rod on a low ceiling is an easy mistake to make.

Matt Black Pendant Lights

Matt black is the finish that does not compete. It disappears against a dark ceiling, frames a window, and gives a room structure without adding another colour to the scheme. It is why it has outlasted most of the trends it arrived with.

Matt, textured and satin

There is more variation here than the name suggests. A true matt black absorbs light and reads almost flat. Textured black has a slight grain that catches the light at the edges. Satin black has a low sheen and looks closer to graphite in daylight. In a room with a lot of natural light the difference is noticeable.

What is in the collection

Single pendants, multi-light clusters, linear bars and chandeliers from Schuller, Quintiesse, Elstead, Kichler and Endon. Black and brass combinations feature heavily, which is the most forgiving way to bring warmth into a black scheme.

One thing worth planning for: black shades throw light down rather than around. In a room with only one ceiling fitting that can leave the corners dark, so pair them with wall lights or a lamp rather than relying on the pendant alone.

Matt Black Pendant Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

We think so, and we would pair black with a warm metal for the most versatile look. Designs such as the Schuller Norma in black and brass, the Kichler Luella in black brass and the Regent Neuilly in black and satin gold suit period and modern rooms alike, in our view. For a plainer line, all-black designs such as the Astro Hashira keep the focus on shape.

Warm, layered light from more than one source, in our view. A single pendant lights the area beneath it most strongly, so add wall lights, a floor lamp or table lamps at different heights to reach the corners. Choose bulbs by lumens for brightness and keep the colour warm: where a fixed colour temperature is listed in this collection, it is 3000K warm white.

A glass or opal shade usually spreads light more widely, while a solid metal shade directs it downwards in a pool. The shade also affects how much light escapes, so compare the lumen figure for the bulb or integrated fitting too. A pool suits a table or island; a wider spread suits general room light. Compare the Astro Taiko's spun metal shade with the Schuller Helia's opal diffuser, then weigh hanging height and glare.

Not checking the drop and the earth. Measure your ceiling height against the drop range on the product page, and adjust the suspension only in the way the maker's instructions allow; do not assume a rod can be cut or a cable extended. Most pendants here with an electrical class listed are Class I, so the metal body must be connected to earth. We recommend a qualified electrician to fit it.

Stay within one range, because black varies by maker, from Matt Black to Satin Black and Carbon Black. The Schuller Norma in black and brass comes as a single pendant, a 4 light pendant and a 3 light semi-flush, and the Diyas Hilton in satin black with dark grey wood runs from a 3 light to a 10 light design. A shared range improves the chance of a match without guaranteeing one, so ask our team if it matters.

Almost any, which is much of the appeal. In our view, black pendants are most striking against white, off-white and pale plaster, and read as a quiet outline in a dark, moody scheme. The colour to plan around is the fitting's second material: the Endon Lille pairs matt black with a natural faux linen shade, the Quintiesse Willow carbon black with gold, and the Endon Bali matt black with natural bamboo.

Over a bath or shower, or where it would hang into a walkway. Every pendant here with a listed IP rating is IP20, so those models are unsuitable for wet bathroom zones, and an unlisted rating does not make a fitting suitable. As a starting point, keep about 2.1m of clear headroom where people walk, checked against the minimum drop. For a low ceiling, browse our semi-flush ceiling lights.
