Modern - Wall Lights - Outdoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

The best modern outdoor wall light is one that suits your home's architecture and does the job you need, a clean cylindrical or cube design for a contemporary new-build, or a simpler geometric fitting for an older property you don't want to look fussy. Beyond looks, check the IP rating suits the wall's exposure and choose a finish that won't clash with your door and window frames.

For either side of a front door, look for a pair of matching wall lights with a clean, symmetrical design, they frame the entrance and make the house feel welcoming after dark. A cylindrical up-and-down light works with most modern facades, while a simple box or drum shape suits a more minimalist front. Keep the finish consistent with your door furniture and house numbers for a pulled-together look.

Modern outdoor wall lights range from sleek, minimalist cylinders and cubes to bolder sculptural statement pieces. Finishes run from matt black and anthracite grey through to brushed brass and stainless steel, so you can match or contrast with your door and window frames. Up-and-down lights are especially popular for adding a graphic, architectural line to a plain wall.

As a general guideline, aim for about 1.7 to 1.8 metres above ground level, roughly eye height, which throws light down and outward without shining directly into anyone's face. Either side of a front door, fit both lights at the same height for a symmetrical look. On an uneven path or driveway wall, measure from the finished ground level at each point rather than the wall itself.

A pair either side of the door is the classic choice and gives a balanced, symmetrical look, especially on a wider porch or a period facade. A single light works fine off to one side if your doorway is narrow or asymmetric, or if you're lighting a side or back door rather than the main entrance. Either way, keep the height and finish matched if you're using more than one.

A modern wall light under a porch canopy or recessed doorway, sheltered from rain hitting it directly, needs at least IP44. On an open elevation, gable end or anywhere rain can blow straight onto it, go for IP65. Coastal properties need the same rating plus corrosion-resistant materials such as 316 stainless steel. Check the spec on the product page, and ask our team if you're not sure.

Yes, most of our modern outdoor wall lights use LED, which uses a fraction of the energy of an old-style halogen or incandescent bulb and lasts far longer, useful given how often an exterior light gets left on. Many modern designs now build the LED module into the fitting itself rather than using a separate bulb, which keeps the silhouette slim. Check the product page to see which type a specific light uses.

Yes, many of our modern outdoor wall lights suit commercial buildings as well as homes, offices, restaurants, shop fronts and apartment blocks all use the same style of fitting. For commercial use, pay close attention to the IP rating and build quality, since these lights tend to run for longer hours and get less day-to-day attention than a domestic entrance light. Trade and bulk orders are welcome.
