Rechargeable Lamps: Discover The Best Cordless Lights For Your Patio & Garden

The problem with lighting a terrace has always been the cable. Running power outside means a trench, an electrician and a decision you cannot easily undo. A rechargeable lamp means picking it up and putting it where you want it.

What these actually are

Proper lamps, not garden spikes. Table lamps, floor lamps and reading lamps from Novena, charged indoors or by USB and carried out for the evening. Most run for several hours on a charge and dim down as the night goes on, and the better ones are IP65 rated so they can stay out in the weather.

Where they earn their keep

Restaurants worked this out first, which is why you now see them on every decent terrace. At home they suit a dining table outdoors, a seating area with no nearby socket, a balcony, or a room where you want a lamp and there is no plug in the right place. There is nothing stopping you using them indoors, and plenty of people do.

Outdoor Rechargeable Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the best outdoor rechargeable table lamp?

The best one suits where it will sit and how you will use it, so start with height and exposure. A low lamp keeps sightlines open across a dining table: the Asta Mini stands 24.3cm high. Novena describes its IP54 lamps for indoor and covered outdoor use, while IP65 models such as the Asta Pro are designed for more exposed tables. After that, choose the finish to suit your furniture.
Are rechargeable lamps worth it?

Yes, if you want light where there is no socket and no fixed wiring. A cordless lamp moves from the dining table to the steps without a cable. Most lamps here need charging before use, while the Palmo solar lanterns charge from their panel and switch on at dusk. Every lamp in this collection comes with a 3-year guarantee, and the product page sets out the terms.
IP54 or IP65: which rechargeable outdoor lamp do I need?

It depends on exposure: IP54 protects against splashing water and limits dust ingress, while IP65 is dust-tight and resists water jets. Most lamps in this collection are IP54, with IP65 options including the Asta Pro and Cristallo. Choose the protection appropriate to the location, then check the maker's instructions for storage, charging and temperature limits. The rating alone does not establish whether a lamp can stay outside permanently.
Table, floor or wall: which cordless lamp should I choose?

Choose by where the light needs to sit. Table lamps such as the Petalo and Asta suit a dining table or low wall, floor lamps such as the Slancio Twin Floor stand beside a seat, and the Slancio Wall lights a reading spot. The Tessera Mini sits on a table or mounts on a wall, casting a soft four-way wash for steps or a shelf. Every lamp here dims from 5% to 100%.
Which cordless lamp is best for reading outside?

A Slancio, which comes in desk, floor, twin floor and wall versions, each with an articulated head you can aim at the page. The Slancio Wall mounts on a wall to give a reading light with no wiring at all. Novena rates the Slancio family IP54 and describes it for indoor and covered outdoor use, so we would keep it under a canopy or in a garden room rather than out on an open terrace.
When is a rechargeable lamp the wrong choice outdoors?

When the light has to come on every night without anyone remembering to charge it. For paths, steps, a front door or a driveway, we would choose wired fittings. The Palmo solar lanterns come closest: they charge from a solar panel or by USB and switch on at dusk, though each evening still depends on the charge. For dependable nightly light, see our bollards and ground lights.
What should I check about charging before choosing a cordless lamp?

How it charges and where you will charge it. Each product page sets out the charging method: the Palmo lanterns, for example, charge by solar panel or by USB, which helps when daylight runs short. Check the supplied cable or charging base, where the maker wants the lamp and charger kept, how it should be stored over winter, and any limits in the instructions.
