Single Ceiling Pendant Lights

Pendant lights are a wonderful way to bring warmth and style to a room. Less 'clinical' than flush ceiling lights sometimes (but not always!) are, the hanging nature of pendant lights means they can really be brought into a room.

Further adding to their appeal is the astonishing range of styles available when people are looking for a pendant ceiling light. Single pendant lights, for example, can provide focused lighting for a specific part of a room.

Multi-light pendant lights, meanwhile, can diffuse light over a wider area. At KES Lighting and Home, we have sourced hundreds of pendant lights from all over the world, and feature such well-known brands as Elstead, Diyas, Eichholtz, Regent and gold pendant lights to chrome pendant lights to ornate modern LED options.

And with prices ranging from under £80 to more than £20,000, there is literally a pendant light for everyone! Please get in touch if you need any help with your shopping.

Pendants - Ceiling Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is a pendant light?

A ceiling light suspended on a rod, chain or flex rather than fixed against the ceiling, typically with an adjustable drop of anywhere from 30cm to 2m. The drop brings the light down to where it is useful and puts the fitting at eye level, which is why pendants suit tables and islands and need more headroom than a flush fitting.

What are the disadvantages of pendant lighting?

Three worth knowing before you buy. A pendant needs headroom, so it rules itself out under about 2.4m unless it is over a table. A single pendant lights a pool rather than a room, so it rarely works alone. And a glass or open-framed one shows the bulb, which means choosing the bulb becomes part of the design rather than an afterthought.

How low should a pendant hang over a dining table?

70 to 90cm above the tabletop, measured to the lowest point of the fitting. That is low enough to light the table and hold the room together, and high enough to see the person opposite. Go to the lower end with a wide shade and the upper end with a narrow one. Nobody walks under it, so normal headroom rules do not apply.

How many pendants should hang over a kitchen island?

Two or three on most islands, spaced evenly with about 75cm between centres and at least 15cm in from each end. Two suits an island up to around 1.8m, three suits 2 to 2.5m. An odd number reads better if the island is long, and one large fitting can beat three small ones on a very wide island.

What is the difference between a pendant and a chandelier?

Light points, mostly. A pendant hangs a single fitting on one drop, whereas a chandelier branches into 3 or more arms or tiers from a central body. In practice a chandelier is the bigger statement and needs more height and space around it, while pendants can be used in pairs and threes over a table or island.

Can a pendant light be shortened?

Almost always, and the product page gives the minimum and maximum drop. Flex and chain-hung pendants shorten at installation. Rod-suspended fittings ship with a set of rods giving a range of roughly 30cm to 1.5m, and unused rods are simply left out. Check the shortest configuration clears your ceiling before ordering.

Do you need an electrician to fit a pendant light?

Replacing a like-for-like pendant on an existing ceiling rose is within reach of a competent DIYer with the power off. Anything adding a new point, moving a circuit or sited in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. Anything over about 5kg also needs the ceiling checking for support, so use a qualified electrician.
