Spotlights - Indoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

What counts as an indoor spotlight?

Any fitting with a head that aims, whether it is recessed in the ceiling, mounted on a plate or clipped to a track. The defining feature is that you can point it. We stock 321, dominated by Astro with 212 and Collingwood with 55, and 197 of them carry a 3 year warranty rather than the usual 2.

Do spotlights have to be recessed?

No, and often they should not be. Surface-mounted plates and bars fix to the underside of the ceiling and need only a cable, which is the answer in a concrete ceiling, a shallow void, or a room where cutting holes is not an option. Recessed looks tidier where the depth exists, surface is more flexible everywhere else.

What is the difference between a single spotlight and a spotlight bar?

How many heads share one point. A single spot is one head on its own plate and needs its own ceiling point. A bar carries 3 or 4 heads on a common plate off a single point, which is why it is the usual answer when you have an existing ceiling rose and want directional light without rewiring.

What bulb do indoor spotlights take?

GU10 on 168 of our 321, with 60 having an integrated LED and a handful using the small MR11. GU10 is the practical choice: mains voltage, no driver, and you can swap beam angle or colour temperature later. A 36 degree beam suits general light, and 24 degrees or narrower is for picking out one object.

Can indoor spotlights be dimmed?

Most can, provided the bulb and the dimmer agree. With GU10 heads the bulb decides, so buy ones marked dimmable and use an LED-rated dimmer. With integrated LED fittings the driver decides, and the product page states whether it is dimmable and on what type of dimmer. Mixing dimmable and non-dimmable heads on one circuit causes flicker.

What guarantee do indoor spotlights carry?

3 years on 197 of our 321, because Astro underwrites most of the range at that length rather than the 2 years typical of decorative fittings. One carries 10. It is worth weighing when you are buying eight or ten of something that will be aimed, adjusted and left in a ceiling for a decade.

When is a spotlight the wrong choice?

Where you want soft, even light. A spotlight produces a defined pool with a visible edge, which is right over a worktop or a picture and wrong in a bedroom or a snug, where it reads as harsh no matter how far you dim it. Use a shaded fitting or lamps for those and keep the spots for the work.
