In homes with double-height hallways, stairwell pendant lighting can transform and elevate the space. Not only do stairwell pendants illuminate the area, but they also infuse drama and flair, especially with long drop stairwell lighting.

For homes with a more traditional layout, smaller-sized drop pendants still amplify the light, imparting a spacious feel and serving as a striking focal point.

With our ceiling light collection, you can find the perfect balance between functionality and style, ensuring your stairwell's ambiance is both inviting and impressive.

Staircase Pendants Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the best lighting for a stairwell?

The best choice depends on the size and shape of the stairwell. A long-drop pendant or chandelier works brilliantly in a double-height space, giving you both a strong artistic focal point and enough light to fill the void. In a smaller, straighter staircase, wall lights or flush ceiling lights are usually the more practical and evenly lit option, since there's less vertical space for a dramatic drop to work with.
How do you light an indoor staircase?

A good staircase lighting plan usually layers more than one type of fixture rather than relying on a single light. A pendant or chandelier over the stairwell void provides the main statement and general light, while wall lights or sconces spaced along the flight fill in shadows on the treads themselves, which matters for safety as much as looks. In a smaller or straight staircase, well-placed wall lights alone are often enough without a pendant at all.
What size pendant light is best for a stairwell?

Size should follow the scale of the stairwell rather than a fixed rule. A double-height or generously proportioned stairwell can carry a large, dramatic pendant or chandelier as its centrepiece, while a narrower or single-storey staircase needs something more restrained so it doesn't dominate the space or get in the way. As a rule of thumb, leave clear space on all sides so the fitting doesn't feel cramped against the walls or bannister.
Where should a chandelier hang in a stairwell?

Centrally is the general rule, both across the width of the stairwell and along its length, so the light and the look feel balanced from every angle. The bottom of the fixture should sit at least 7 to 8 feet above the stairs at any point, to keep head clearance safe for anyone on the stairs. In a double-height stairwell, many people hang the chandelier so its main body sits roughly at eye level from the top landing, which gives a striking view from both ends of the staircase.
How do I work out the right drop length for a long stairwell pendant?

Measure from the ceiling fixing point down to where you want the bottom of the pendant to sit, keeping at least 7-8 feet of clearance above the stairs at every point along the flight, not just at the top. Because stairs slope, the safe drop is usually measured from the highest tread the light hangs over, not the floor below. Most long stairwell pendants come with an adjustable cable, and our team can help you get the length right before you order.
Can I use an extra-large or statement pendant in my stairwell?

Yes, a double-height stairwell is one of the best places in the house for a genuine statement piece, since the extra vertical space gives a large pendant or chandelier room to hang without overwhelming the space below. For particularly big, dramatic designs, it's worth browsing our extra-large pendants collection alongside the stairwell range. Just keep the safe clearance above the stairs in mind whatever size you choose.
Is it harder to fit a light over a stairwell than in a normal room?

Yes, mainly because of access rather than the wiring itself. Working safely above an open stairwell often means specialist access equipment rather than a household stepladder, so it's a job most people leave to a professional installer. The electrical connection should always be carried out by a qualified electrician in any case. If you're planning a long-drop pendant over stairs, factor in professional fitting as part of the project.
Should I light my hallway and staircase the same way?

Yes, if your staircase rises directly from an open hallway, a single long-drop pendant hung over the stairwell void can often light both areas well, since the void usually sits at the heart of the space. If the hallway is a separate, more enclosed area, it may work better with its own fitting. Our hallway lighting range is worth a look alongside the stairwell collection for a matching scheme.
