Surface Mounted Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is a surface mounted spotlight?

A spotlight that fixes onto the ceiling rather than cutting into it, usually on a small round or square plate with an adjustable head. It gives you directional light without a hole, which is why it is the answer in a concrete ceiling, under a shallow void, or anywhere you cannot cut. Ours are almost all Astro.
What is the difference between a downlight and a surface mounted light?

Whether it goes into the ceiling or onto it. A recessed downlight sits flush inside the void, needs 100mm or so of depth and a hole cut for each one, and often needs a fire-rated body. A surface mounted spotlight bolts to the underside, needs only a cable, and can be aimed after fitting. Surface wins wherever the ceiling cannot be cut.
Can surface mounted spotlights be used in a bathroom?

Some can. Of our 38 surface mounted fittings, 6 are IP65 and 4 are IP44, and those are the ones rated for a bathroom, with the required rating set by the zone the fitting is in. The remaining 27 are IP20 and belong in a dry room. Bathroom electrical work is notifiable under Part P, so use a qualified electrician.
What bulb do surface mounted spotlights take?

Mostly GU10, which covers 28 of our 38, with a couple taking the smaller MR11. GU10 is a mains-voltage bulb that pushes and twists into the holder, and it is the reason these are so easy to live with: no driver, no transformer, and you can change the beam angle or the colour temperature simply by changing the bulb.
Do surface mounted spotlights need a driver?

The GU10 ones do not, since GU10 runs at mains voltage straight off the circuit. The integrated LED versions do need a driver, and 4 of our 38 are integrated. The product page states which, and if a driver is required it will say so along with the type. Fitting a driverless bulb into a fitting that needs one does not work.
What warranty do they carry?

3 years on 36 of our 38, which reflects that nearly all of them are Astro. One carries 10. That is longer than the 2 years typical of decorative fittings, and it is worth knowing when you are choosing between a spotlight you will aim once and forget and something you may be adjusting for years.
When is a surface mounted spotlight the wrong choice?

Where you want the ceiling to disappear. A surface fitting is visible, and a row of six across a plain ceiling is a strong visual line whether you meant it or not. If the ceiling has the depth and there is no fire or acoustic reason against it, recessed downlights give the same light and no object.
